Catholic Archbishop of Owerri Ecclesiastical Province, Dr. Anthony Obinna 
Okorocha, who was fielding questions from journalists in Owerri, also accused the archbishop of being a member of All Progressives Grand Alliance, APGA. 
 
He said: “Archbishop Obinna once confirmed to me that he was an APGA loyalist. I advised him to distance himself from partisan politics.” 
 
While urging the cleric to steer clear of partisan politics, the governor, however, insisted that “the archbishop is getting too deep into partisan politics.” 
 
Okorocha recalled a recent incident when Archbishop Obinna was called to pray at a function and he started asking the government to pay retirees their arrears of pension and workers salaries. 
 
He advised the archbishop to pray for people in authority and the government, rather than saying inciting prayers. 
 
Answering a question on the reports emanating from the rerun polls in Rivers State, Okorocha commended Governor Nyesom Wike for putting up a dogged fight. 
 
“I commend Governor Wike for doing everything possible to secure his position. He put up a good fight,” Okorocha said. 
 
The governor was happy that the All Progressives Congress, APC, grabbed a senatorial seat, as well as some seats in the House of Representatives and the state Assembly.</div>

AFTER years of planning, tinkering and preparation, the first Igbo language newspaper, Ikoro, is ready. 
 
The newspaper will be presented on March 15 by Imo State Governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha. 
 
 
Speaking on the issue, Dr Samfo Nwankwo, Special Adviser to the Imo State Governor on Igbo Affairs, said eminent Igbo leaders including Dr Alex Ekwueme, Commodore Ebitu Ukiwe (retd), Chief Enwo Igariwey, Pascal Dozie and Rear Admiral Ndubuisi Kanu (retd) among others are expected at the ceremony billed for Imo Internal Conference Centre, Owerri. 
 
Nwankwo, who is also director, Ikemba Odumegwu Ojukwu Centre, OWENI, spoke during a courtesy visit to Vanguard Newspapers. 
 
Apart from Ikoro, he said the governor would on the same day launch the compulsory learning and teaching of Igbo language in all schools in Imo State. 
 
Asked if the governor was copying the Yoruba and Hausa, which have newspapers in both languages, Nwankwo said no, stressing that the move is to ensure that the Igbo language did not go into extinction. 
 
‘’The fact that Igbo language is going extinct, which is a dangerous development is behind the move. If nothing is done to arrest the situation, we will have identity crisis. We felt attention should be paid to the reading of Igbo language, which is part of our culture. It is time for us to go back to our roots and be proud of our language,’’ he said. 
 
He said the compulsory learning and teaching of Igbo language in all schools in Imo up to first and second years in higher institutions is backed by the “Development of Igbo Language Law 9 of the Imo State House of Assembly.’’ 
 
Disclosing that publication of Ikoro is being funded and sponsored by the Imo State Government, he said the paper would cover the five South-East states and other Igbo-speaking parts of the country.</div>

The confidence vote was said to have been passed sequel to the antecedents and proven track records of the CP. 
It was said that Lakanu’s positive interference in security challenges in the state has enhanced the relative peace and political stability, the state is presently enjoying. 
 
In a letter to the CP confirming the vote of confidence dated February 25, 2016, signed by the Clerk of the House, Sir Chris Duru and made available to our correspondent on Saturday, the House said, “I wish to convey to you, Imo State House of Assembly Resolution passed during its plenary sitting on Thursday, February 25, 2016” 
 
 
 
“During the said sitting, Imo State House of Assembly resolved to pass a vote of confidence on you, Mr. Taiwo F. Lakanu on your performances in the state over security challenges. Please accept, Commissioner of Police, the assurances of our highest regards.” 
 
Speaking to our correspondent on the vote, the member representing Oru West State Constituency, Mr. Donatus O. Onuigwe described that CP Lakanu as a bridge – builder. 
 
He said, “The professional ingenuity and wisdom exhibited by the police boss in the crisis at Osemotor in Oguta Local Government Area of the State could be better imagined that expressed. His interference in the matter brought a lasting peace in the area, which if not well managed could have caused mayhem in the entire state”. 
 
In the same development, the Legislator for Owerri Municipal State Constituency and House Majority Leader, Mr. Lugard Osuji commended the CP for his aiding in quelling the crisis between the Organized Labour and the State Government. 
He said, “It was Lakanu, who was one of the protagonists in seeing to the end of the crisis. He was the one that summoned the leadership of the Labour and State Government and eventually brokered the peace.” 
 
Also speaking, Mr. Lawman Duruji, who represents Ehime Mbano State Constituency stated that the CP calmed the medical doctors in the state, who under the aegis of Nigeria Medical Association alleged that the state police shot one of their own in the head during one of their peaceful demonstrations in Owerri over concessioning of some health institutions in the state. 
 
The CP was said to have quelled the then imminent clash with doctors when he asked them to produce the doctor that was said to be shot at the head, extract of the bullets and clips depicting when he was shot. 
 
“These questions the CP posed to doctors with Dr. Hycinth Emele as the NMA Chairman raised no answers and proved the doctors wrong, hence the end of matter,” Duruji said.</div>

The fracas started when a faction of the party led by Chief Nnamdi Anyaehie disrupted a meeting of the Caretaker Committee led by Vitalis Okafor. 
 
Okafor, whose Caretaker Committee was inaugurated on January 29, 2016 to pilot the affairs of the party for three months, had hardly settled down for business with his members when the Nnamdi Anyaehie-led faction stormed the secretariat and attempted to chased everybody away. 
 
 
 
Member of the clashing factions were later dispersed by armed policemen manning the secretariat after which Anyaehie and his supporters drove away in a long convoy. 
 
After the fight, during which many people sustained injuries, the police cordoned off the premises. 
 
Okafor told journalists later that Anyaehie was responsible for the avoidable confusion within the party, accusing him of scheming to perpetuate himself in office. 
 
He said the meeting was convened to brief members of the party on the latest development in the legal battle between his committee and the Anyaehie faction. 
 
Okafor said Anyaehie’s tenure had since expired as pronounced by the Party’s National Executive Council, which subsequently installed his caretaker committee to preside over the affairs of the party for three months. 
 
He said, “The people of the state and the PDP have rejected them because they have failed; yet, they do not want to read the writing on the wall.” 
 
Okafor, however, advised members of the party to remain calm and law abiding and to go to their various LGAs and spread the news that the Anyaehie-led executive had been rejected. 
 
“It is regrettable that somebody, who parades himself as a party Chairman could engage thugs to disrupt a meeting authorised by the National Publicity Secretary of our party, Chief Oliseh Metu.’’

The EFCC operatives arrested Governor Okorocha’s aides. 
Three top officials of Imo state government were arrested by operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Wednesday, March 2. 
 
The Cable reports that the suspects allegedly diverted the sum of N2 billion bailout fund given to the state by the federal government for payment of salary arrears of the state’s civil servants. 
 
The suspects are: Obi Paschal Chigozie, the principal secretary to the governor of Imo state, Rochas Okorocha; Uzoho Casmir, the director of finance, and Iheoma Kenneth, the treasurer. 
 
 
 
In a statement issued on Thursday, March 3, the anti-graft agency said: 
 
“Their arrest followed an investigation into the alleged diversion of the said money which revealed that, the cashier had made cash withdrawal of N456.532m between September 3, 2015 and October 10, 2015 from the government house account domiciled in Zenith Bank. 
 
“However, it was revealed that the said amount was given to an aide of the chief of staff to the governor, following approval and directive by the principal secretary to the governor.” 
 
The EFFC added that the suspects would be charged to court as soon as investigations are concluded. 
 
Earlier this year, there was a massive shake up in Imo state as Governor Okorocha suspended over 3,000 workers and stopped their salaries. 
 
In a swift reaction, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) issued a 14-day ultimatum to the state government demanding to recall the suspended workers and tackle their unpaid salaries and other benefits expires. 
 
Okorocha bowed to pressure from the NLC as he recalled some workers who had been earlier suspended in 19 parastatals, departments and agencies.</div>

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has admitted being used by fellow governors to test-run the failed sack policy which he started in the state in January. 
 
He said the act was to the detriment of his political future. 
 
The governor had in January 2016 announced the suspension of about 7000 civil servants from 19 parastatals, departments and agencies who are yet to reach their retirement age. 
 
Okorocha also announced the sack of the workers of the primary health care across the 27 council areas of the state as well as secretly sacking junior civil servants. 
 
 
 
The development led to the Organized Labour shutting down the state Wednesday and thereby forcing the state governor, Owelle Rochas Okorocha to rescind his decision to sack the workers. 
 
Speaking before conceding to the Labour demands, Okorocha, who was in the company of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Dr. John Oyegun, confessed that he was used by his colleagues to implement the sack policy. 
 
According to him, “Sentiments apart, I can’t continue on sentiments because I’m not alone in this crisis. State governors are crying (about the heavy wage bill), waiting for whom to send and here I am to bell the cat at the expense of my political career.”

He said the government had to yield to workers’ demand to restore industrial peace in the state. 
 
Part of the government/labour agreement stated that government would source for funds to pay workers which would be verified by the joint committee of government and labour. 
 
According to the agreement, government would fund its operations with not more than 30 per cent of the verified revenue for the month. 
 
The committee would apply the balance of 70 per cent in the settlement of salaries of public servants and pensioners.

The organised labour had shut down the Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, some banks, all ministries and offices including the LGAs and the state Secretariat as workers trooped out for the protest. 
 
The protesters were led by the National President of NLC, Ayuba Wabba and other national leaders including the state chairmen from South/East, South/South and North. 
 
They matched from the secretariat of the Nigeria Medical Association on Port Harcourt road, toward Imo Government House, where they blocked all major entrances. 
 
Wabba had demanded for immediate recall of all sacked workers and stopping further sack of workers in the state without following laid down procedures. 
 
Meanwhile, the National Chairman of APC, Chief John Oyegun has appealed to Gov. Rochas Okorocha to adopt the spirit of flexibility in handling issues concerning workers. 
 
Oyegun, who flew to Owerri to pay solidarity visit to Governor Okorocha over the issue, said that workers and government needed to cooperate with each other to get the state out of the present situation. 
 
 
 
“If a child is crying continuously and refuses to stop despite everything done to pacify him, something needed to be done”, he said. 
 
Oyegun also appealed to workers in the state to face the fact and have a round table with government on possible solutions that would continue to unite them.

“The national leadership of the NLC should be patriotic enough to advise the leadership of the NLC in the state to honour their invitations to participate in the high-powered 18 – member committee set up by the state governor to review the cases of the staff affected by the suspension in question, so that the matter can be resolved amicably in the spirit of no victor, no vanquished”, Okorocha pleaded. 
 
The statement recalled that the inauguration of the committee could not take place last Tuesday, because the Labour Representatives did not come for the exercise. 
 
 
Okorocha equally recalled that the Committee has the state NLC Chairman, the Trade Union Congress, TUC Chairman, the State Chairman of Nigeria Medical Association, NMA, and the Chairman of National Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, as members.

A peaceful protest by medical practitioners in Imo State, turned deadly after an overzealous and trigger-happy policeman shot a Consultant Family Physician in the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, FMC, Dr. Bende Azudialo. He was allegedly shot in the head by a policeman. The state Chairman of the Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Dr. Hyacinth Emele, has given a graphic account of the incident and ordered a three-day warning strike with effect from today (Friday). 
 
 
 “If the policeman that fired the lethal shot is not identified and prosecuted, doctors will commence indefinite industrial action. The security agencies and Imo State Government should note that all hospitals in the state will close shop thereafter until the erring policeman is fished out and punished”, Emele said. Continuing, the Imo NMA boss, who also displayed the blood-stained white overall worn by the wounded doctor, also said that a team of medical health personnel started working on the wounded Consultant Family Physician, as soon as he was rushed to the FMC. 
 
 
 
“The initial report we got from the medical team was that Dr. Azudialo lost about 1.5 litres of blood when he was rushed to the hospital and that was a substantial loss”, Emele said Speaking also, Dr. Darlington Akukwu recalled how the NMA formally wrote the Commissioner of Police, the Directorate of State Security, DSS, the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, and all other related agencies to inform them about the peaceful protest. 
 
“We processed peacefully until we got to Orlu Road Roundabout. The police barricaded the road and when we tried to explain our mission to them, they started firing teargas canisters. One of them later fired a shot that wounded Dr. Azudialo”, Dr. Akukwu said.

Imo State Governor, Rochas Okorocha, yesterday disclosed that the state is insolvent, as its monthly wage bill has outstripped its monthly statutory allocation from the Federal Government. The governor said monthly servicing of the bailout fund has further compounded the situation. 
This was just as he reiterated that there was no going back on the state government’s decision to concession the management of parastatals. 
 
 
Okorocha, who revealed this when he spoke to newsmen at the Government House in Owerri said the monthly wage of the state had always been higher than what the state receives from federal allocations and internally generated revenue. 
 
“The monthly wage bill of the state is N4.2 billion which is far higher than what we receive from federal allocation including the internally generated revenue which means that the state government has always been operating on a deficit. As at December 31, 2015 the state received N1.9 billion from the Federal Government while the monthly wage bill of the state for the same period was N4.2 billion.” 
 
 
“We cannot continue to patch a cracked wall as if all is well, we need to break it down in order to rebuild it, and the current wage bill of the state is beyond our capacity. Imo State now receives the least allocation among the South-East states because of the monthly repayment of the bailout fund which the state took from the Federal Government, a situation which has further compounded the financial situation of the state.” The governor insisted that in spite of the financial dilemma of the state, no worker is being owed any salary.</div>

The state Governor of Imo state Rochas Okorocha openly told elders at the state house that they should be grateful that Buhari apprehended a criminal and terrorist like Nnamdi Kanu who deserves to be persecuted by hanging. He told them that Biafra has long been dead with Ojukwu and not even Amadioha can resurrect it, that very soon many youths will loose their lives in the name of this struggle. On behalf of all the state governors in the Eastern region, we have unanimously agreed with President Buhari not to release that terrorist and troublesome boy who does not know his root.
