This was even as scores of people were injured, following a clash between supporters of the PDP and men of the state police command. 
Earlier in the day, APC supporters had staged a peaceful protest in Port Harcourt demanding the swearing in of two lawmakers elected on the party’s platform into the state House of Assembly. 
The two lawmakers are Victoria Nyeche representing Port Harcourt City 1 Constituency and Andrew Miller, representing Opobo/Nkoro Constituency. 
 
The APC protesters marched from the party’s secretariat along Forces Avenue, Old GRA, Port Harcourt, through major streets, with placards. 
The protesters were, however, stopped by policemen, who took over strategic government buildings in the state, especially the Government House, the House of Assembly complex and the High Court complex, from going beyond the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) area, to avert a clash with PDP supporters. 
 
Secretary of APC in the state, Chief Emeka Bekee, said they did not take their protest to the House of Assembly complex as initially planned because of the planned visit of Governor Nyesom Wike, to the House. 
“The governor had fixed a programme in the House of Assembly and because APC is a law-abiding party that has the fear of God, we want to give them the benefit of doubt. But, subsequently, we will not accept that. Whatever they want to happen will happen; we will not take it anymore,” Bekee said. 
 
However, Publicity Secretary of PDP in the state, Samuel Nwanosike, denied claims by the police that supporters of the party were out to counter the protest by members of the opposition APC. 
He insisted that they had mobilised to pay a solidarity visit to the Speaker, Adams Dabatorudima. 
“Funny enough, on our way to the Rivers State House of Assembly, we saw fierce looking Policemen, who attacked us with live ammunition and teargas. 
Some of our colleagues are in the hospital right now with life threatening injuries,” he claimed. 
He called on the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to investigate the attack on the unarmed youths.</div>

Nyesom Wike of Rivers has said the decision of the National Judicial Council (NJC) directing judges under investigation to step aside portends great danger to the nation’s democracy. 
Mr. Wike made the assertion when the executive members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Port Harcourt branch paid him a courtesy visit on Friday. 
 
The NJC announced the decision on Wednesday, following calls for the suspension of the judges who are accused of corruption. 
 
According to him, the u-turn by the NJC will encourage politicians to write petitions against any judge whose judgment is likely to go against such politician. 
 
“This move to ask judges to step aside is in favour of politicians because no judge will deliver judgment against government or a ruling party. 
“The implication is that politicians can now write as many petitions alleging that they saw a judge taking brown envelope – which will warrant the judge to be asked to step aside. 
 
“For us, politicians, we are happy with this development because if I notice that I will lose a case, then I will tell my lawyer to write a petition which will result to the judge stepping aside. 
“So, in other not to be alleged to have done anything wrong, judges will not give judgment against government or the ruling party. 
“This is because, if judge deliver judgment against government or the ruling party, then agencies of government will come after them,” he said. 
 
Mr. Wike said the development portends grave danger to the judiciary arm of government and to the common man. 
 
He said the move was a clear manipulation and attempt to silence the opposition, especially as the nation was heading toward 2019 general elections. 
 
The governor said that example to the manipulations was INEC’s quick reaction to announce federal and state legislative rerun elections shortly after the National Assembly ordered it to do so. 
 
“Simply because the Senate said it must conduct election within five weeks; the next day, INEC came up with a time table for the election. 
 
“This is the same INEC that cited insecurity as reason why it could not conduct elections in Rivers, and now within one day after Senate’s position, the same INEC released a time table. 
 
“The question is when did INEC meet security agencies to now take a position that there is no longer security problem in Rivers State, hence the decision to conduct the rerun elections. 
 
“All these boil down to manipulations which not only endanger our democracy but threatens us as a people,” he said. (NAN)</div>

 The detectives were in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, and Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, all week trying to establish whether four properties in the two cities truly belong to Mrs. Jonathan. 
 The assignment led the investigators to suspect that seven more properties including the former Customs Service officers mess in Port Harcourt and a plot of land under construction were acquired by her. 
 Others in the Rivers State capital are two duplexes at 2/3 Bauchi Street; landed property with blocks at Ambowei Street; three Luxury apartments of 4-bedroom each at Ambowei Street; and Grand View Hotel on Airport Road. 
 Those in Yenagoa are two marble duplexes at Otioko GRA by Isaac Boro Expressway; Glass House on Sani Abacha Expressway which serves as the office of the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board; Akemfa Etie Plaza by AP filling Station, Melford Okilo Road; and Aridolf Resort, Wellness, and Spa along Sani Abacha Expressway. . 
 EFCC may invoke Section 7 of the EFCC Establishment Act 2004 on the affected properties after due verification. Already, the EFCC has written to the Head of the Civil Service in Bayelsa State demanding the pay status and allowances of Mrs. Jonathan during her tenure as a Permanent Secretary. 
 It also sought explanation on whether or not she was paid in dollars, besides travelling estacodes, while in office. The investigators are already back in Abuja to continue their assignment.</div>

The Independent National Electoral Commission, in statement by its secretary, Augusta Ogakwu, announced the suspension of the National Assembly and State Assembly rerun elections earlier slated for July 30, after risk assessments and consultations with security agencies and relevant bodies. 
“The reports of these assessments have been almost unanimous in concluding that the prevailing security situation in most parts of the state where elections are to hold are not conducive for peaceful elections,” INEC said. 
“In the Commission’s view, the rhetorics of some of the political actors, the incidence of violence in a number of local government areas where these elections are scheduled and the atmosphere of fear and intimidation created present danger in proceeding with elections as earlier scheduled.” 
Earlier, INEC conducted the rerun legislative electors on March 19, but “regrettably, the elections in all three Senatorial districts and several other of these constituencies could not be concluded due to violent disruption of the process which necessitated the suspension of the exercise in all the senatorial districts and affected constituencies”. 
INEC urged continuous efforts by “respected” individuals, organisations and leaders to douse tension and ensure conducive atmosphere, adding it has responsibility to ensure safety of electorate, electoral personnel and observers. 
The commission did not issue a fresh date for the polls, but assured “that it is ready to conclude elections in Rivers State within shortest time possible once security situation is conducive for the conduct of peaceful polls”. 
But the main actors in Rivers politics, Messrs Wike and Amaechi, were made to agree to a peace deal to end political violence in the state. 
 
The deal was brokered by the acting Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, and the Director-General of the State Security Service, Lawal Daura, police spokesperson, Donald Awunah, said in a statement Tuesday evening. 
“In a concerted effort to guarantee a violent-free and credible re-run senatorial/house of representative elections in Rivers state, a crucial meeting to chart the path to peace in Rivers state before, during and after the re-run elections in the state was held today, July 26, 2016 between the inspector-general of police, Ag IGP Ibrahim K. Idris and the director-general of Department of State Services, Musa Daura,” Mr. Awunah said. 
 
“The two major players in the politic of Rivers state, His Excellency Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers state and the Hon minister of transport, Rotimi Amaechi, were in attendance. 
“The meeting deliberated on the overall need to have peaceful, free and fair election devoid of violence, which was the hallmark of the previous elections in the state. 
“The governor, His Excellency Nyesom Wike and minister, Rotimi Amaechi resolved to be irrevocably commit to lasting peace and vouched to play the game by the rules in the forthcoming re-run elections in the state. They also agreed to prevail on their teaming supporters to adhere to their commitment to peace and security in the state. 
“In addition, the two major stakeholders agreed to convene another meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, aimed at further solidifying the commitment to peace reached in the meeting, which is a prelude to the roadmap that will usher a permanent and lasting peace in Rivers state. 
“The meeting was held in an atmosphere of mutual respect and cordiality.”</div>

Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr. Chris Ngige, made the appeal yesterday at the 40th conference of the Nigerian Optometric Association (NOA) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. 
 
Ngige, who was represented by the state Coordinator of National Directorate of Employment (NDE), Mr. Nnamdi Asomogha, said the rise in militancy was a negative development for the region in particular, and the country in general. 
He said activities of the militants were to disrupt the oil industry, stressing that Buhari’s administration will secure the country and secure lives and property. 
The minister said the federal government is determined to promote economic growth and wealth creation through a sustained war against corruption. 
 
“I am very excited about the theme of this conference aptly entitled: ‘Sustainable development goals… the place of Optometry’. The message conveyed by this theme clearly aligns with the policy direction of the federal government under the leadership of President Buhari. 
The federal government has put in place a regime of prudent and transparent management of the national resources through the elimination of waste and leakages, as well as deliberate moves to diversify the economy to enhance a broader revenue base, away from over-dependence on oil. 
 
“But, we must take cognisance of the fact that the general improvement in the affairs of the country requires the support of good people of the country, rather than destructive activities of some elements. In particular, the Niger Delta contributes significantly to the wealth of the country.” 
He urged the militants to retrace their steps and embrace peace and called on the NOA to key into the national objectives by partnering with government. 
 
Governor Nyesom Wike, who declared the conference open, commended NOA for choosing Rivers State to host for programme, stressing that it was an indication that the state was peaceful. 
Wike, who was represented by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Theophilus Odagme, disclosed that government had invested so much in security, adding that Rivers State was among the states in the country that recognised the germane services of optometrists in the health sector. 
Earlier, National President of NOA, Dr. Damian Echendu said the theme of the conference was a reflective of “our conscious paradigm shift to align our association’s objectives with global and national economic policies such as the sustainable development goals.”</div>

The former governor of Rivers State and the Minister of Transportation, Mr. Chibuike Amaechi, and the Chairman of the Supreme Council of Ogoni Traditional Rulers, King. Godwin Gininwa, have said that the former president of Nigeria, Mr. Goodluck Jonathan made a great mistake for failing to implement the United Nations Environmental Programme report on Ogoniland. 
 
Amaechi and Gininwa made this statement on Thursday in Bodo City, Gokana Local Government Area of the state during the official flag-off of the cleanup of the area by President Muhammadu Buhari, in their separate speeches. 
 
 
In his speech, Amaechi noted that he (Amaechi) did everything possible to ensure that Jonathan implements the UNEP report on Ogoniland, but regretted that his efforts yielded no fruit. 
 
The transport minister said that the former president refused to carry out the project that would have benefitted the people of the state, adding that Jonathan was never a brother to the state. 
 
He added that the cleanup would bring a positive change to the economic life of the people of the area, stressing that the president had kept to his promise. 
 
“…we did everything possible to make our brother the former president to implement the report, but, he refused. 
 
“But with President Muhammadu Buhari, we are here today in keeping with our campaign promise. 
“The economy of Ogoni people will change through this cleanup. There is no way the people will not receive anything from the money that would be invested for this project. Through that the economy of the people will change.” 
 
Similarly, Gininwa who is a respected monarch in the Niger Delta region noted that Jonathan made mistake for failing to implement the cleanup of Ogoni and the entire region during his time in office. 
 
Gininwa emphasized that Jonathan disappointed the people of Ogoni even after the people lead campaign of his election to monarchs in the Northern state. 
 
The Royal father called on politicians and Nigerian leaders to learn how to keep to the promises to the people. 
 
Gininwa also bemoaned that all his efforts and those of other Ogoni traditional rulers to make Jonathan to resolve environmental problem in the area were futile. 
 
He asserted that the time of mourning for the Ogoni people and the Niger Delta was over, adding that flag-off was the beginning of happiness for the people of the area. 
 
“I want to plead with Nigerian leaders to keep to their promises. We campaigned for Goodluck Jonathan. During the campaign we met with traditional rulers in other parts of the country. Good enough we took over government. 
 
“Personally, I have nothing against Jonathan because he is my son, but he made mistake for not implementing the report. He disappointed us. The time for mourning is over because Ogoni is now happy”. 
 
The monarch also pleaded with the FG to take up the construction of Bodo-Bonny road, adding that the road has for long been abandoned. 
 
Ogoni beacon of change – Abe 
 
In his goodwill message, the Senatorial Candidate of the All Progressives Congress in Rivers South-East Senatorial District in the March 19th national and state legislative rerun elections, Sen. Magnus Abe described the implementation of the cleanup of Ogoniland as an evidence of change. 
 
Abe said that the change which the nation was expecting had commenced from Ogoni, adding that the president has changed the history of the people of Ogoni. 
 
“We have become the beacon of change for Nigeria. We are the only people who did not use violence to achieve this dream. 
 
With Ogoni, you now know that it is wrong to use violence in pursuing a course. Buhari has changed the history of Ogoni. Change has come to Ogoniland”, he said.</div>

The cancelation is not unconnected to security threats to the President from a newly formed militant group, Niger Delta Avengers who had threatened to kill the President should he step foot in the Niger Delta region. 
 
The president had blamed an ear infection for canceling the visit to Lagos where he was scheduled to commission some projects finished by Governor Akinwunmi Ambode two weeks ago. 
 
It is unclear if the President plans to attend the ECOWAS meeting scheduled to discuss issues of regional security and economic development in Dakar tomorrow.

Wike, who spoke, yesterday, in Port Harcourt, during the PDP state congress, maintained that the party would re-take the Federal Government in 2019. 
 
 
Meanwhile, Mr Felix Obuah, was returned as Chairman of Rivers State chapter of PDP at the party’s state congress, yesterday, in Port Harcourt. 
 
Some other members of the new state executive council are Vice Chairman, Mr Charles Awotu; Sam Okpoko, Secretary and Caretaker Committee Chairman, Ikwerre Local Government Area, Mr Sam Wonosike, Publicity Secretary of the party. 
 
Meantime, the state chairman, Mr Obuah, in his speech, alleged that APC was behind recent killings and violence in the state, stressing that the party was scheming to achieve a declaration of state of emergency in the state with the alleged sponsored violence. 
 
Obuah, who lauded Governor Wike for his successes so far, said those plotting the downfall of the government will not succeed. 
 
He said: “We supported the former governor, Mr Chibuike Amaechi, for two terms of eight years. Why has he and his supporters deliberately refused to support the PDP government in the state? I am very sad about the recent upsurge in killings in the state, but I suspect the APC is behind the sudden wave of violence in the state.”</div>

The Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Mr. Aniedi Ikoiwak, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt that judgment of election tribunal and Court of Appeal excluded the party and its candidate from participating in the election. 
NAN recalls that the All Progressives Congress candidate, Mr. Fredrick Anabraba, won the election for the constituency with 2,970 votes. 
Ikoiwak explained that two days to the re-run, the commission wrote to the state chapter of PDP informing it that the party and its candidate had been excluded in the election. 
“The decision was taken by the commission in compliance with the judgment of the tribunal and that of the Court of Appeal,” he said. 
The commissioner said insinuations that the commission deliberately disqualified the candidate was false and baseless. 
 
He said the courts took the decision and INEC complied. 
Ikoiwak said the commission would fix a date for repeat election in the eight local government areas where the exercise was cancelled due to irregularities.</div>

According to NewTelegraph online, a woman, an ad hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), who lectures at the University of Port Harcourt, had absconded since Saturday with the election result sheet, and other voting materials. 
 
The DPO of Mkpolu Police Station, who was in charge of security during voting in the area, had 
raised an alarm over the INEC’s staff disappearance, until she surfaced at the Mile I Police Station. 
 
It was at the Mile I Police Station where Amaechi, Petetside and Mrs. Ibim Semenitari had gone to meet the woman that Wike also stormed the station, asking Amaechi what he was doing there. 
 
He also queried Peterside and Semenitari why they chose to be in Port Harcourt and at the police station when they were supposed to be in their respective LGAs. 
 
Meanwhile, Rivers State Electoral Commissioner, Aniedi Ikoiwak has announced the cancellation of election in two more Local Government Areas (LGAs) in the state due to irregularities. 
The council areas are Etche and Asari-Toru. The Saturday elections in six LGAs had earlier been cancelled.</div>

One of the DSS officers, who is assigned to Dakuku Peterside (name withheld) was hit in the leg. One of the security details told DAILY POST that, 
“We got information that PDP thugs want to swap results at the collation centre at Isiokpo in Ikwerre Local government area. We mobilised to go and stop the thugs. On our way back to Port Harcourt, we noticed that a car was trailing us. At UTC junction, we decided to be sure of the people trailing us; the youths started shooting sporadically. My boss was hit.” 
In the meantime, the Chief of Staff to Nyesom Wike, the Rivers state Governor, Emeka Woke has been arrested by the DSS in connection with the attack on Dakuku Peterside.

The Public Relations Officer of the command, Ahmad Muhammad, told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Port Harcourt on Saturday that it received report about the death of one person in Eleme, Eleme Local Government. 
Mr. Muhammad said 10 people were arrested in Eleme while two were picked up on their way to Akinima, Ahoada West Local Government Area. 
 
“The suspects committed election-related offences. They are being interrogated while investigation has commenced on the offences committed,” he said. 
He also said the police did not know what caused the death of a middle-aged man in Eleme and that the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area received the report.

INEC’s Deputy Director of Public Affairs, Nick Dazang, confirmed to PREMIUM TIMES that the elections were suspended in the areas because of violence. 
Mr. Dazang said there was also high voters’ apathy in the areas because of the allegations of fake result sheets. 
Bonny, Andoni, and Khana were among the local government areas where the Rivers state government and the Peoples Democratic Party alleged fake result sheets were in circulation. 
 
There were reports of pockets of violence and ballots snatching in the elections, although the police said the poll was largely peaceful. 
For instance, some thugs were said to have snatched election materials around 2.30pm at three units in WIiyaakara Ward, Khana Local Government Area. 
At Bori, also in Khana, INEC officials were reportedly scared of stepping out of their offices to conduct the election because of threats from persons wearing fake military uniform.

A 14-seater bus was burnt down in Alode, Eleme Local Government Area, and there were also reports of a shoot-out in Rumuekini, Obio Akpor Local Government Area. 
The Army in the state paraded some fake soldiers arrested at Khana. 
However, counting of votes has begun in some polling units across the state. 
 
 
Meanwhile, the state government has accused the Nigerian military of colluding with the All Progressives Congress in the state to hijack election materials. 
The government in a statement sent to PREMIUM TIMES around 3.58pm said it “noted with shock and disgust the role played by the military in the reported diversion of all voting materials meant for the Isaka community, in Okrika Local Government Area.” 
The government said, “This is sickening betrayal of democracy by the military, and will never be allowed to stand.”
