Without the protection of lives and property, there will be no governance and development.  <br>“We are one State that has suffered neglect from the Federal Government in terms of support to fight insecurity. They have refused to pay back funds that we used in constructing Federal projects. But that will not stop us from intervening when the need arises”, he said.</blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">The Governor said that he resolved to increase the support to the security agencies because of the successes recorded by Operation Sting. He regretted that cultists had taken over youth groups across the State, necessitating the state government proscribing all youth Ggroups.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br></div><blockquote style="clear: both;">“Anybody operating under a youth body henceforth will be arrested by security agencies. Before you contest for any youth body’s leadership, you must send the names to the DSS and Police for screening. If they are cultists, we will not allow them to operate,” he said.</blockquote><div class="separator" style="clear: both;">Wike said that the vehicles and gunboats donated to the security agencies must be deployed to secure Rivers State. He announced that the Rivers State Government would establish a Trust Fund to cater for the families of policemen who lose their lives while fighting crime.</div></div>

Nyesom Wike of Rivers has said the decision of the National Judicial Council (NJC) directing judges under investigation to step aside portends great danger to the nation’s democracy.<br/>
Mr. Wike made the assertion when the executive members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) Port Harcourt branch paid him a courtesy visit on Friday.<br/>
<br/>
The NJC announced the decision on Wednesday, following calls for the suspension of the judges who are accused of corruption.<br/>
<br/>
According to him, the u-turn by the NJC will encourage politicians to write petitions against any judge whose judgment is likely to go against such politician.<br/>
<br/>
“This move to ask judges to step aside is in favour of politicians because no judge will deliver judgment against government or a ruling party.<br/>
“The implication is that politicians can now write as many petitions alleging that they saw a judge taking brown envelope – which will warrant the judge to be asked to step aside.<br/>
<br/>
“For us, politicians, we are happy with this development because if I notice that I will lose a case, then I will tell my lawyer to write a petition which will result to the judge stepping aside.<br/>
“So, in other not to be alleged to have done anything wrong, judges will not give judgment against government or the ruling party.<br/>
“This is because, if judge deliver judgment against government or the ruling party, then agencies of government will come after them,” he said.<br/>
<br/>
Mr. Wike said the development portends grave danger to the judiciary arm of government and to the common man.<br/>
<br/>
He said the move was a clear manipulation and attempt to silence the opposition, especially as the nation was heading toward 2019 general elections.<br/>
<br/>
The governor said that example to the manipulations was INEC’s quick reaction to announce federal and state legislative rerun elections shortly after the National Assembly ordered it to do so.<br/>
<br/>
“Simply because the Senate said it must conduct election within five weeks; the next day, INEC came up with a time table for the election.<br/>
<br/>
“This is the same INEC that cited insecurity as reason why it could not conduct elections in Rivers, and now within one day after Senate’s position, the same INEC released a time table.<br/>
<br/>
“The question is when did INEC meet security agencies to now take a position that there is no longer security problem in Rivers State, hence the decision to conduct the rerun elections.<br/>
<br/>
“All these boil down to manipulations which not only endanger our democracy but threatens us as a people,” he said. (NAN)</div>

<br/>
The Independent National Electoral Commission, in statement by its secretary, Augusta Ogakwu, announced the suspension of the National Assembly and State Assembly rerun elections earlier slated for July 30, after risk assessments and consultations with security agencies and relevant bodies.<br/>
“The reports of these assessments have been almost unanimous in concluding that the prevailing security situation in most parts of the state where elections are to hold are not conducive for peaceful elections,” INEC said.<br/>
“In the Commission’s view, the rhetorics of some of the political actors, the incidence of violence in a number of local government areas where these elections are scheduled and the atmosphere of fear and intimidation created present danger in proceeding with elections as earlier scheduled.”<br/>
Earlier, INEC conducted the rerun legislative electors on March 19, but “regrettably, the elections in all three Senatorial districts and several other of these constituencies could not be concluded due to violent disruption of the process which necessitated the suspension of the exercise in all the senatorial districts and affected constituencies”.<br/>
INEC urged continuous efforts by “respected” individuals, organisations and leaders to douse tension and ensure conducive atmosphere, adding it has responsibility to ensure safety of electorate, electoral personnel and observers.<br/>
The commission did not issue a fresh date for the polls, but assured “that it is ready to conclude elections in Rivers State within shortest time possible once security situation is conducive for the conduct of peaceful polls”.<br/>
But the main actors in Rivers politics, Messrs Wike and Amaechi, were made to agree to a peace deal to end political violence in the state.<br/>
<br/>
The deal was brokered by the acting Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, and the Director-General of the State Security Service, Lawal Daura, police spokesperson, Donald Awunah, said in a statement Tuesday evening.<br/>
“In a concerted effort to guarantee a violent-free and credible re-run senatorial/house of representative elections in Rivers state, a crucial meeting to chart the path to peace in Rivers state before, during and after the re-run elections in the state was held today, July 26, 2016 between the inspector-general of police, Ag IGP Ibrahim K. Idris and the director-general of Department of State Services, Musa Daura,” Mr. Awunah said.<br/>
<br/>
“The two major players in the politic of Rivers state, His Excellency Nyesom Wike, the governor of Rivers state and the Hon minister of transport, Rotimi Amaechi, were in attendance.<br/>
“The meeting deliberated on the overall need to have peaceful, free and fair election devoid of violence, which was the hallmark of the previous elections in the state.<br/>
“The governor, His Excellency Nyesom Wike and minister, Rotimi Amaechi resolved to be irrevocably commit to lasting peace and vouched to play the game by the rules in the forthcoming re-run elections in the state. They also agreed to prevail on their teaming supporters to adhere to their commitment to peace and security in the state.<br/>
“In addition, the two major stakeholders agreed to convene another meeting in Port Harcourt, Rivers state, aimed at further solidifying the commitment to peace reached in the meeting, which is a prelude to the roadmap that will usher a permanent and lasting peace in Rivers state.<br/>
“The meeting was held in an atmosphere of mutual respect and cordiality.”</div>

Minister of Labour and Productivity, Dr. Chris Ngige, made the appeal yesterday at the 40th conference of the Nigerian Optometric Association (NOA) in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.<br/>
<br/>
Ngige, who was represented by the state Coordinator of National Directorate of Employment (NDE), Mr. Nnamdi Asomogha, said the rise in militancy was a negative development for the region in particular, and the country in general.<br/>
He said activities of the militants were to disrupt the oil industry, stressing that Buhari’s administration will secure the country and secure lives and property.<br/>
The minister said the federal government is determined to promote economic growth and wealth creation through a sustained war against corruption.<br/>
<br/>
“I am very excited about the theme of this conference aptly entitled: ‘Sustainable development goals… the place of Optometry’.  The message conveyed by this theme clearly aligns with the policy direction of the federal government under the leadership of President Buhari.<br/>
The federal government has put in place a regime of prudent and transparent management of the national resources through the elimination of waste and leakages, as well as deliberate moves to diversify the economy to enhance a broader revenue base, away from over-dependence on oil.<br/>
<br/>
“But, we must take cognisance of the fact that the general improvement in the affairs of the country requires the support of good people of the country, rather than destructive activities of some elements. In particular, the Niger Delta contributes significantly to the wealth of the country.”<br/>
He urged the militants to retrace their steps and embrace peace and called on the NOA to key into the national objectives by partnering with government.<br/>

Governor Nyesom Wike, who declared the conference open, commended NOA for choosing Rivers State to host for programme, stressing that it was an indication that the state was peaceful.<br/>
Wike, who was represented by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Theophilus Odagme, disclosed that government had invested so much in security, adding that Rivers State was among the states in the country that recognised the germane services of optometrists in the health sector.<br/>
Earlier, National President of NOA, Dr. Damian Echendu said the theme of the conference was a reflective of “our conscious paradigm shift to align our association’s objectives with global and national economic policies such as the sustainable development goals.”</div>

Alimodu Sheriff was sacked as the party chairman by members of the party during the convention and a caretaker chairman in the person Ahmed Makarfi, was appointed.<br/>

An angry Sheriff, approached the Lagos state High Court which gave an injunction barring INEC from recognizing the caretaker committee.<br/>

Some other members of the new state executive council are Vice Chairman, Mr Charles Awotu;  Sam Okpoko, Secretary and Caretaker Committee Chairman,  Ikwerre Local Government Area, Mr Sam Wonosike, Publicity Secretary of the party.<br/>

Meantime, the state chairman, Mr Obuah, in his speech,  alleged that  APC was behind recent killings and violence in the state, stressing that the party was scheming to achieve a declaration of state of emergency in the state with the alleged sponsored violence.<br/>
<br/>
Obuah, who lauded Governor Wike for his successes so far, said those plotting the downfall of the government will not succeed.<br/>
<br/>
He said: “We supported the former governor, Mr Chibuike Amaechi, for two terms of eight years. Why has he and his supporters deliberately refused to support the PDP government in the state? I am very sad about the recent upsurge in killings in the state, but I suspect the APC is behind the sudden wave of violence in the state.”</div>

According to NewTelegraph online, a woman, an ad hoc staff of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), who lectures at the University of Port Harcourt, had absconded since Saturday with the election result sheet, and other voting materials.<br/>

The DPO of Mkpolu Police Station, who was in charge of security during voting in the area, had <br/>
raised an alarm over the INEC’s staff disappearance, until she surfaced at the Mile I Police Station.<br/>
<br/>
It was at the Mile I Police Station where Amaechi, Petetside and Mrs. Ibim Semenitari had gone to meet the woman that Wike also stormed the station, asking Amaechi what he was doing there.<br/>

He also queried Peterside and Semenitari why they chose to be in Port Harcourt and at the police station when they were supposed to be in their respective LGAs.<br/>

Meanwhile, Rivers State Electoral Commissioner, Aniedi Ikoiwak has announced the cancellation of election in two more Local Government Areas (LGAs)  in the state due to irregularities.<br/>
The council areas are Etche and Asari-Toru. The Saturday elections in six LGAs had earlier been cancelled.</div>

Leadership reports that Amaechi accused his successor on Wednesday, March 16, speaking on a live programme of a private television station in Port Harcourt, the Rivers state capital.<br/>

He also accused Wike of hididng the ex-militant leader and the chairman of Asari-Toru local government council, Sonoma Jackrich, who has been recently declared wanted by the police.<br/>

“Now, you are asking a question when all his council chairmen are known militants. It is not an allegation. For example, the chairman of Asari-Toru local government council is living in Government House, because he cannot go to work. Why can’t he go to work? Because the police stormed his house, found AK-47, live ammunitions. Please, call the commissioner of police and the director of the SSS to confirm.<br/>

“They went to arrest him but he was taken away by government. He is a known militant; he was granted amnesty. When I say known, he was on the list of those granted amnesty. His name is Sonoma Jackrich. You can go on with your investigation. I am saying the police went to his house in the village and saw the weapons. Let the  government deny it.<br/>

“I am a Christian and I will never sit down with a cultist. In fact, if you want me to leave here, just tell me that you have a murderer here. I won’t feel comfortable sitting with such person. As a governor, I never sat down with cultists, but in this government, they are appointing Chief Ateke Tom as special adviser to the governor,” he said.<br/>

Amaechi noted that when he was the governor, he approached even his enemies to assist him in finding ways to move the state forward. He called on his successor to do the same to resolve the current insecurity in the state.<br/>

Earlier this week, speaking at a town hall meeting in a community, Amaechi called on the people of the state to vote for the All Progressives Congress in the rerun election scheduled for Saturday, March 19.<br/>

In his speech, he also accused Goodluck Jonathan of imposing Governor Wike on the people of the state. Therefore, he urged the people to reject the candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party in the election to “shame” the former president.</div>
