Tsoho asked for reassignment of the case following a petition by the legal team of Nnamdi Kanu led by Chuks Muoma, alleging that he was biased in its handling of Kanu's case.<br/>
<br/>
Muoma said they have no confidence in Tsoho as they believe he was not been fair to Kanu and was acting on the orders of the Federal government. While asking for reassignment, Tsoho said<br/>
“I have no interest in trying your matter and I will return it to the CJ, but I will condemn the attitude of that counsel. I do not care if you take your case to another planet”.</div>

The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu and two other pro-Biafra agitators, David Nwawusi and Benjamin Madubugwu, have dragged the judge handling their trial, Justice John Tsoho, before the National Judicial Council, NJC.<br/>
<br/>
<br/>
<br/>
The trio who are answering to a six-count treason charge before the Federal High Court in Abuja, accused the judge of “misconduct and manifest bias”.<br/>
<br/>
Sequel to the petition dated April 26 and an accompanied verifying affidavit on oath, dated May 24, the defendants, on Monday, asked Justice Tsoho to temporarily hands-off their case.<br/>
<br/>
They filed the motion on a day the Federal Government maintained that its witnesses were in court and ready to testify against Kanu and others.<br/>
<br/>
A lawyer from office of the Department of Public Prosecution, DPP, Mr. M. S. Labaran, while acknowledging the petition pending before the NJC, however alleged plot by the defendants to scuttle their trial.<br/>
<br/>
“My lord, our witnesses are available, but the prosecution was confronted this morning with a fresh motion from the defendants. Even from the face of the motion, there is a clear indication that the defendants are out to truncate the proceedings of this court”, Labaran submitted.<br/>
<br/>
He said there was need for the prosecution to react to some of the issues Kanu and the others raised before the Council.<br/>
<br/>
Meantime, in the motion they filed pursuant to section C Rule 1(A) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria Code of Conduct for Judicial Officers and section 36 of the 1999 Constitution, as amended, the defendants applied for an order disqualifying Justice Tsoho from further proceedings in the matter.<br/>
<br/>
According to them, “There is a manifest case of bias against the court, which complaint is also a subject of scrutiny by the NJC, currently probing the allegations of misconduct and manifest bias against the court in charge No: FHC/CR/383/2015.<br/>
<br/>
“That by virtue of the aforesaid scrutiny, this court’s impartiality in further proceedings in this charge shall be reasonably questioned”.<br/>
<br/>
In an eight-paragraphed supporting affidavit deposed by one Ayoola Emmanuel, the defendants, told the court that the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, who is the head of the NJC, formally acknowledged receipt of their petition vide a letter with Ref. No. NJC/F.3/FHC.8/1/116A.<br/>

They argued that “following the present action by the NJC, it will only be tidy and most honourable that the court disqualified itself forthwith from further proceedings in the matter.</div>

MASSOB State Coordinator of Religion in Anambra, Pastor Ani Nwede James made this known to newsmen adding that the group had decided to renew what he described as its covenant with God.<br/>
<br/>
He said the group which is identified as Biafran Clergy Men would be backing up its prayers with occasional fasting to draw down the hand of God.<br/>
<br/>
<br/>
Pastor James explained that the move to go spiritual to actualise Biafra started sixteen years ago but had only come to fulfilment this year.<br/>
<br/>
The clergy called on Ohaneze Ndigbo, Churches and other religious leaders to join them in the crusade to actualise the sovereign state of Biafra.<br/>
<br/>
Commenting on the recent statement credited to President Muhammadu Buhari that Biafra would never be achieved, Pastor James said the clergymen had already petitioned God over that, saying that anybody who in any imagination thought that Biafra would not be actualised was having a day dream “because it is a task that must be done.”<br/>
<br/>
The pastors also told the Fulani herdsmen to leave “Biafran land” for good as God’s anger would descend on them for spilling innocent blood.<br/>

Meanwhile, 5,000 protesting members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) have said President Buhari that he cannot stop the actualization of a sovereign state of Biafra.<br/>

Kanu made this allegation through his lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, at a media briefing in Abuja on Wednesday.<br/>
<br/>
Ejiofor said the president’s “pronouncement” on issues regarding Biafra was prejudicial, and that they were capable of forcing the hands of the court to convict his client.<br/>
<br/>
He cited the president’s statements in Katsina, where he said that nobody could divide the country, and in his December presidential media chat, where he said that the IPOB leader should not be granted bail because he was a flight risk.<br/>
<br/>
The counsel opined that Buhari was inadvertently compelling the court to do his bidding.<br/>
<br/>
“Nnamdi Kanu is a political prisoner, and this was confirmed in the presidential media chat,” he said.<br/>
<br/>
“The pronouncements of the president is affecting the decision of the court. We consider the pronouncements prejudicial.<br/>
<br/>
“The president should not be making pronouncements that are indirectly influencing the decision of the judges.”<br/>
<br/>
Ejiofor added that he had filed a fundamental rights suit against the federal government at the ECOWAS court on the imprisonment of Kanu.<br/>
<br/>
“We went to ECOWAS court because we believe we will be given justice. Only ECOWAS court can give us justice,” he said.</div>

The group stated that Debe’s statements showed he was not properly informed about the movement and restoration of Biafra. “We regret that somebody from the family of the former Biafra leader, late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu or one of the sons made this type of uninformed statement.”<br/>

In a statement by the Media and Publicity Secretary of IPOB, Mr. Emma Powerful stated that Debe Ojukwu worked for Bilie that had sympathy for the All Progressives Congress (APC).<br/>

According to Powerful: “The question is where and when did he start IPOB ? Does he recall when Nnamdi Kanu was visiting his residence at Lekki Phase 1 in Yoruba land with the publisher of Eastern Pilot newspaper to ask him to join IPOB? This man must be shown where he belongs and not IPOB and he should stop ridiculing himself.<br/>

“Was it not the same Nnamdi Kanu that used Radio Biafra to defend him when Ojukwu’s children said his mother was not married to the late Odumegwu Emeka Ojukwu and as such labelled him no body in the society. Without the intervention of Nnamdi Kanu on Radio Biafra, he Debe would have been found nowhere today.<br/>
<br/>
“Debe should be asked where and when he contributed to Radio Biafra formation and IPOB. He has brought shame to the revered Ojukwu’s name and family all because of political opportunism,” Powerful stated.<br/>

He continued: “How many IPOB meetings has he Debe attended? Does he know we have IPOB family meeting in the same Lekki where he lives? How come he has never attended any IPOB meeting either in Nigeria or abroad? Debe should join the Director of Public Prosecution of Nigeria to try and condemn our leader so that way, he and Ikedife can get their job and contracts.”</div>

The group said the governors and the politicians in the zones used the lives of their subjects to play politics and refused to act even when they got the information of the attack on time.<br/>

In a statement by the Media and Publicity Secretary of IPOB, Mr. Emma Powerful said, “if not so, why would they not summon an emergency meeting to deliberate the impending dangers? They didn’t do that because they were used by their counterparts in the north against their people.<br/>

“Now, the Hausa/Fulani Boko Haram terrorist group are killing, raping our women and girls, destroying our farmland and kidnapping our people with impunity on daily basis while disguising as Fulani herdsmen and cattle rearers, nobody is saying anything because we are Biafrans. “We are totally disappointed in the governors and politicians of this land for not knowing the meaning of chief security officer of the state and their limit. They were remanded by their brothers in the army and police custody in Umuahia prison. The warning came on the heels of Monday’s attack by Fulani herdsmen on a community in Uzo Uwani Local Government Area of Enugu State in which about 15 people were allegedly killed.<br/>

MASSOB, which said it was worried by the inability of the Federal Government to stop the increasing destruction of farmlands, raping of women, armed robbery, kidnapping as well as killing of innocent Nigerians by Fulani herdsmen.<br/>
<br/>
National Director of Information of MASSOB, Sunny Okereafor, who handed down the ultimatum in an interview with newsmen in Aba, said the Federal Government has been playing with fire over the attacks and threatened that MASSOB will not fold its arms and allow Fulani herdsmen invade Igbo communities to rape women, kill residents and burn their houses.<br/>
<br/>
According to him, “MASSOB is worried that Fulani herdsmen have become very daring in their attacks since President Buhari came to power.<br/>
<br/>
“We are not saying Buhari is their sponsor, but his silence over the attacks is suspicious. MASSOB is giving Buhari a 30-day ultimatum to stop the attacks or face our wrath.<br/>
<br/>
“Again, we are warning Fulani herdsmen and their sponsors to withdraw from Biafra land. They should count Igbo land out of their Islamisation policy.<br/>
<br/>
“We are also warning Ndigbo to remain on alert, as these Fulani herdsmen are terrorists posing as herdsmen. Soon, they will pay for all their atrocities against the people of Biafra.”<br/>
<br/>
Okereafor, who disclosed that his group had set up a committee to monitor the activities of Fulani herdsmen in Igbo land, added that MASSOB would be forced to abandon her non-violent policy to protect Biafrans if the Federal Government refuses to check the invasion of its communities by the herdsmen.</div>

Chinedu was reacting to a statement credited to the duo resident in the United States of America and the United Kingdom respectively. The two had reportedly accused the Deputy Chairman of the Supreme Council of Elders of Indigenous People of Biafra, Dr Dozie Ikedife, as a ‘stooge’ of the ruling APC government under President Muhammadu Buhari.<br/>
<br/>
But, the group’s spokesman said the statement was unfortunate and lacked logic. His words: “Ours is a respected and responsible group. Dr Ikedife is among the courageous elders in Igboland that was instrumental to the Biafra legal suit against Nigerian Government .This is verifiable with Suit<br/>

No FHC/OW/ CS/192/2013.It is also on record that Clifford Iroanya and his cohorts wrote Nigerian Government to discontinue this celebrated court case as they believe in violence to achieve Biafra. But that is not possible.<br/>
<br/>
On the issue of Nnamdi Kanu-led IPOB being a global giant, Chinedu explained that the IPOB is not a group, but a people scattered all over the world demanding a separate existence from Nigeria. He told the press that the Nigerian Government knew the real people behind the Biafran struggle were men of proven integrity.<br/>
<br/>
In the same vein, the Chief Editor of Biafra Voice International, UK, Comrade Nnabuike Nnadede, said that the Biafran agitators were lucky to have a leader such as Dr Ikedife, Ikenga Nnewi. The media chief advised all Biafrans to come under the authority of the Supreme Council of Elders of Indigenous People of Biafra, to be taken serious by the international community, “rather than join noise makers and people who are frustrated, dejected and jobless, seeking relevance…”<br/>

Meanwhile, an octogenarian and pro-Biafra activist, Sir R.O.Okereke, has made a fresh call for another dimension to actualize the self-determination dream of the more than 15 states in Nigeria to be known as the United States of Biafra.<br/>

Okereke, who spoke in Ozubulu, Ekwusigo Local Government Area of Anambra State, said that the general elections of 2015 in which the All Progressives Congress (APC) won in 20 and a half states and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), 15 and a half clearly indicated that those in the PDP states should come together by way of diplomacy and present to the United Nations, European Union and African Union their choice of government and interim officers for early approval and take off period.</div>

Ikedife had said Kanu was only the Director of Radio Biafra and not the leader of IPOB as he claimed, saying that, Supreme Council of the Indigenous People of Biafra (SCIPOB) was founded by some group of persons in London and has also been used by the Bilie Human Right Initiative.<br/>
<br/>
The ex-Ohanaze chieftain went ahead to deny the allegation that he campaigned for All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last election, adding that Kanu has no power or right to dissolve the SCIPOB, which he said was made of college of leadership.<br/>
<br/>
He denied claiming to be the leader of any pro-Biafran groups, be it MASSOB or IPOB.<br/>
<br/>
But the spokespersons of IPOB Dr. Clifford Iroanya and Mr. Emma Mmezu while reacting to the claims of Ikedife, described him as, “a liar who cannot reap where he did not sow”.<br/>
<br/>
“The public is advised to ignore him. Ikedife is a liar for saying he is the co-founder of Radio Biafra. All the records are there at Companies House in the United Kingdom to prove that Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from inception has always been the Director of Radio Biafra.<br/>
<br/>
“Only a very stupid and retarded fool will think that IPOB, which today is a global phenomenon emerged out of a leaderless structure. It is equally disheartening that people with a clear agenda for supporting the North in their continued subjugation of Biafrans will have the temerity to shamelessly come forward to comment on the leadership of a movement they know nothing about”.<br/>

“Ikedife should concentrate on his support for Hausa/Fulani hegemony, which he enthroned in Ohaneze when he was the president-general of the now moribund group. Ikedife should first ask who created and appointed him into the position he claims he now occupies. Without our leader Nnamdi Kanu and how he promoted the APC affiliated Bilie Human Rights Initiative, no one will know who they are. This same Ikedife was against Radio Biafra stance to oppose the Islamisation of Biafra through APC,” they alleged.<br/>

“It is on record that Kanu visited Dr. Ikedife at his clinic in Nnewi with a copy of Eastern Pilot newspaper that caricatured APC and Chris Ngige in Anambra to explain to him why IPOB cannot support APC and Ngige in the gubernatorial election. Ikedife couldn’t hide his anger that we were campaigning against APC in Anambra. Three other people were present at that meeting and can verify this story.<br/>

Mr. Arinze Awogu, now a Special Assistant to Gov. Willie Obiano was present at the meeting and he can confirm it”.<br/>

“IPOB is a global giant not because of the treacherous and disgraceful acts of the likes of Ikedife of the now dissolved Council of Elders but is purely due to the leadership qualities and fearlessness of Kanu, the leader of IPOB. Ikedife cannot reap where he did not sow. Has his group Bilie Human Rights ever come out for protest or chastise the murderous state apparatus in Nigeria? Which IPOB meeting has Ikedife ever attended?” they queried.<br/>

“He is a member and one of the leaders of Bilie Human Rights Initiative dedicated to using the name of Biafra to work for Buhari. Anybody can search online for news stories of Ikedife supporting APC and Buhari, this fact is not hidden. The likes of Ikedife are the people that ruined Igboland through Ohaneze and he wants to bring the same destructive confusion to IPOB but he has failed. Any reasonable person will know that he is a hired hand doing the bidding of his masters from the North” the spokespersons alleged.<br/>

The group continued: “The question sensible people must ask is why is it that everybody is now clamouring to be identified with IPOB led by Kanu if not for the phenomenal achievements recorded under his leadership without sponsorship from any politician. What has been accomplished by Kanu in terms of building this movement from bottom up all over the world cannot be replicated by anyone or group in this generation”.<br/>

“Why is it that people are not clamouring to join Ikedife’s group if they are doing the right thing for Biafrans. We would want it to be placed on record that Ikedife’s group solicited for support to allow Okorocha to join Biafra agitation at a meeting held at Bannister House in Hackney London through a Bilie solicitor known as Emekaesiri, but this request was flatly turned down by our leader because he knew Okorocha did not mean well for Biafrans”<br/>

“Another question Ikedife must answer is who is the leader of IPOB as recognised by the United Nations and what name does his group bear? We have raised these issues for people to know that Ikedife and his group cannot deceive us with a non-existent court case at Owerri High Court. It is sad to see an old man display so much jealousy and greed at an age when he should be devoted to the preservation of truth and our value system”.<br/>

The anchor, who also claims to be the new deputy director of the station, was reportedly lamenting the state of power and energy resources in the country, when the news platform monitored the transmission.<br/>

When the radio station received a call from Nigeria to complain that the radio was not being aired via FM in some parts of the South-East, the anchor said the problem would be ‘looked into’.<br/>

<br>According to a report on This Day, Umeh was arrested yesterday, March 3, at his Enugu residence and was taken to Abuja by road.<br>
<br>Although the details of his arrest still remain sketchy, Stan Okeke, Umeh’s media aide, confirmed the arrest of his boss in Enugu.<br><br>
<br>He said: “Officials of the DSS arrested Umeh at his residence following a petition by political leaders from Anambra state allegedly led by former governor of the state, Dr. Peter Obi that he is sponsoring the activities of the IPOB, MASSOB.<br>
<br>“Contrary to reports, Umeh was not handcuffed and was not flown to Abuja. They travelled by road and as I speak with you.”<br>
<br>Umeh’s arrest comes just three months after he blasted the DSS over continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, the director of Radio Biafra and Leader and IPOB leader.<br>
<br>He is in race for a seat at the Nigerian Senate. Hon. Ekwunife had polled 101548 votes to outsmart Umeh’s 77129 votes to win the Anambra Central senatorial election.<br>
<br>Announcing the result, Dr. Pius Okoye, the INEC returning officer attested that the poll was free, fair and credible, but the Appeal Court however nullified Ekwunife’s election.</p></div><br>

The IPOB leader has been remanded in Kuje prison in Abuja and he has been appearing in court from the prison. Vanguard reports that members of the group accused the APC-led government of making life difficult for Kanu by denying him food newspaper and toiletries and keeping him in an air-tight room.<br/>

Mr Emma Powerful who is the media officer of IPOB said in Inewi on Sunday, February 21 that Kanu is also denied access to some of his property which the Department of State Services (DSS) is still holding on to even when they are not part of the exhibits needed by them to prosecute him.<br/>

He alleged that the APC-led federal government ordered the confiscation of Kanu’s money and clothes.<br/>
<br/>
“We are telling Nigerians that APC government is a fraud, full of lies and deceit. It will never offer Nigeria anything good. Their anti corruption crusade is a sham because the people that make up the party have a lot of skeletons in their cupboards and their President is shielding them. They should shamelessly release Kanu’s belongings that are not exhibits tendered in the court and stop disgracing Nigeria to the international community.”<br/>

He called on “the Amnesty International, African Union, the United Nations, and the international community that have relationship with Nigeria to prevail on the APC government in Nigeria to stop the denial, intimidation and harassment of Mr. Kanu and release him unconditionally because he has not done anything wrong to deserve the alleged ill-treatment being given to him in the Kuje, Abuja prison.”<br/>

Meanwhile, the Arewa Consultative Forum and Ohanaeze Ndigbo have sent a message to the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration condemning the killing of members of IPOB and have called for the release of Kanu.</div>

But Kanu’s arrest and detention has galvanised support for the Biafra movement among young people who never knew the horrors of war and have little to lose in fighting for a better life. Today the former regional power is impoverished, with dilapidated infrastructure and high unemployment fuelling resentment against the federal government. “We have been failed in so many ways,” Kanu said, describing Igbos as “third class citizens”, echoing many in the region who say they are still being punished for the civil war. Kanu, who has described Nigeria as a “zoo” which “has to come to an end”, was a relative unknown before his arrest.<br/>

But President Muhammadu Buhari, facing security threats from Boko Haram in the northeast and an uneasy peace in the oil-producing south, has said Kanu poses a threat to Nigeria’s fragile unity. In December, a finger-wagging Buhari said Kanu committed “atrocities” against Nigeria, adding “there’s a treasonable felony against him and I hope the court will listen to the case”.<br/>

Dressed in an outfit of pristine white and sporting a neat salt-and-pepper beard, Kanu last appeared in public at an Abuja court Tuesday, arriving in handcuffs and flanked by prison officers. His lawyer spent the bulk of the afternoon fighting a state application to have some proceedings held behind closed doors. “When people are refused access to the court, I ask myself are the defendants actually condemned before they are heard?” said Chuks Muoma, warning against a “secret trial.” The prosecution alleges Kanu was running an armed group with ritual baptisms and young men conscripted as “Biafran soldiers”. Kanu’s half-sister, Tonia Kanu, said the current response to the protests was only worsening the situation. After the judge adjourned Kanu’s case until February 19, Tonia received reports that police had shot dead protesters in the southeast city of Aba.<br/>

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Tuesday dismissed an application by leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra and founder of Radio Biaf‎ra, Nnamdi Kanu, for the release of certain items, including his British and Nigeria passports, which are in the custody of the Department of State Service.<br/>
<br/>
Justice James Tsoho dismissed the application made orally by Kanu’s lawyer, Mr. Chuks Muouma (SAN), who had sought the release of the items because they would not be needed by the prosecution since they were not listed as part of exhibits to be tendered.<br/>
<br/>
Apart from the passports, other items which Muouma sought to be released to the IPOB leader who is currently in detention at Kuje prison along with his two co-accuse, are cash sums of $2,200 and N87,000.<br/>
<br/>

Justice Tsoho, in dismissing the application for lacking in merit, insisted that the fact that the items were not listed as possible exhibits did not foreclose the possibility of their being later used by the prosecution as exhibits.<br/>
<br/>
‎He then adjourned the case till February 19 for the hearing of an application by the prosecution for protection of its witnesses.<br/>
<br/>
The judge, before adjourning the case,  granted the request by the defence lawyer to the effect that relations of the accused persons be allowed in the court room subject to security screening and the capacity of the court room.<br/>
<br/>
Kanu, David Nwawusi and Benjamin Madubugwu are being prosecuted on six counts of treasonable felony, unlawful possession of firearms and other offences bordering on their agitation for secession ‎of the Republic of Biafra from Nigeria.<br/>
<br/>
‎Justice Tsoho had on January 29 denied bail to Kanu and the two other defendants and ordered that they remained on remand pending the period of their trial.<br/>
<br/>
The judge in rejecting the accused persons’ bail application, held that they were not entitled to bail as they failed to challenge the allegation by the prosecution that they would continue to commit the alleged crime for which they were being prosecuted if granted bail.<br/>
<br/>
Kanu was in the custody of the Department of State Service from the time of his arrest in a Lagos hotel on October 14, 2015 till January 20, 2016, when he was transferred to prison by an order of Justice Tsoho , shortly after he was arraigned along with two others.<br/>

Though he eventually succumbed to persuasion by his lawyer to alight from the prison van, however, Kanu, swore that he would not allow anybody to remove the handcuffs which he wore into the courtroom.<br/>

Justice Tsoho had on January 29, denied bail to Kanu and two other pro-Biafra agitators, Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi, who are facing trial with him.<br/>

Nigeria’s old Biafra problem has reared its head again and with it, the specter of disintegration. For a thirty-month period between 1967 and 1970, Nigeria was embroiled in a bloody civil war as its eastern region unsuccessfully tried to secede from the country under the banner of the Republic of Biafra.<br/>
<br/>
The latest episode in the Biafra crisis revolves around the arrest on October 19, of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of a secession movement called the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Kanu is presently facing trial for sedition and treason. Since his arrest, protesters demanding both his release and an independent Biafra have repeatedly clashed violently with security forces with resulting deaths.<br/>

<br/>
On the international front, the European Union’s foreign policy chief recently weighed in on the matter with a policy statement and the controversy is on its way to the International Court of Justice at The Hague. To be sure, though the wider Igbo community do not support secession, the grievances about ethnic Ibo marginalization touted by the Pro-Biafra activists resonate highly with them.<br/>
<br/>
<br/>
In context, Nigeria by character is fundamentally a tribal society with longstanding distrust among the various ethnic groups in addition to deep seated primordial loyalties. Rightly or wrongly, most ethnic Igbos believe that since the end of the civil war in 1970 and prior to the arrival of Goodluck Jonathan at the helm in 2010, Nigeria’s central government deliberately pursued a discriminatory policy aimed at marginalizing the Ibos. It is this tribal factor that largely explains the overwhelming Ibo support for Jonathan’s re-election despite the administration’s unfortunate record of high corruption and underperformance.<br/>
<br/>
<br/>
By contrast, Muhammadu Buhari, a northern Muslim, is particularly viewed with suspicion and distrust in much of Igbo-land. Incidentally, separatist impulses and/or cries of marginalization in Nigeria are not limited to the Igbos in the Southeast. For example, after the mysterious death of Moshood Abiola as a political prisoner in 1998, separatist sentiments were heard among his Yoruba kinsmen in the Southwest around that period. Also, there was deep frustration and deadly violence in northern Nigeria after Jonathan defeated Buhari in 2011 amidst claims that the presidency should have been rotated to the north as allegedly promised a dispute that terribly aggravated the Boko Haram problem and deeply divided the north and the south. However, the surprising success of the National Conference of 2014 offers Nigeria a silver lining, namely, that Nigeria’s diverse constituent groups seemingly want to continue coexisting with one another if fair terms of coexistence can be arranged.<br/>
<br/>
Among the most valuable proposals adopted at the National Conference was the provision for power rotation among the regions in the country. Given the country’s tribal character with its unfortunate, albeit understandable, obsession with control of the national government, the power rotation option for all its rather wooden or inelegant character, seems particularly utilitarian. Quite simply, Nigerians need to take the pragmatic step of first forging a country prior to attempting to build or develop it. The notion of “power rotation” may seem crude to democratic purists, yet, each society being different, it does have genuine utility in the current Nigerian context, comparable to the archaic device of the electoral college in American presidential contests, which made the new constitution acceptable to the smaller states.<br/>
<br/>
In this regard, Nigeria’s National Conference of 2014 and the American Constitutional Convention of 1787 in Philadelphia can be viewed as parallel events aimed at renegotiating and improving the terms of national coexistence. In the end, nothing short of proactive measures by Nigeria is needed.<br/>
<br/>
<br/>
And there is genuine opportunity in this crisis for the Nigerian government to profoundly strengthen the country. Since the continued detention of Kanu in disobedience of court orders is simply incompatible with the rule of law in a democratic society, the government is bound to release him.<br/>
<br/>
However, the government can take the wind out of the sails of Kanu and other ethnic separatists around the country by publicly committing itself to a reasonable timeline in which to implement the National Conference recommendations. This path offers the Nigerian government a genuine opportunity for a positive outcome in the current crisis.<br/>
