 In a statement issued by Col. Sani Usman, acting Director Army Public Relations in Abuja, the army, however said it lost two soldiers during the fight. 
 Usman said the terrorists launched attacked on troops of Operation Lafiya Dole and Multinational Task Force at about 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, which lasted for two hours. 
 He said while many of the insurgents escaped with gunshot wound, four soldiers also sustained injuries. 
 “The bodies of our late colleagues and the wounded have since been evacuated. 
 “The troops have continued mop up and clearance operations of the remnants of the terrorists. 
 “They have also intensified vigilance and high level of alertness,” he said. 
 Usman said items recovered from the terrorists include a gun truck, one 60mm Mortar tube, seven 60mm mortar bomb, a General Purpose Machine (GPMG), three damaged AK 47 Rifle and four bandoliers of anti-aircraft rounds of ammunition.

The soldiers were also accused of manslaughter, stealing, negligence of performance of military duties, sexual relationship with spouse of military personnel, disgraceful conduct of indecent nature, and scandalous conduct. 
 
The trial began after the General Officer Commanding at the division, Maj. Gen. Laz Ilo, inaugurated the General Court Martial in Ibadan, which is presided over by Brig. Gen. Ibikunle Raji with five other members. 
 
Those arraigned were a major, one captain, one lieutenant, one second lieutenant, one corporal and one private. 
 
The GOC said the military formation was anchored and driven by core values and discipline. 
 
He said, “In administration of discipline in the Nigerian Army, we ensure that justice is never miscarried. The accused, who have committed the offence, are given ample opportunity and are required to defend themselves. Under my command, the division will not tolerate any form of indiscipline. I will not condone any form of indiscipline. Every act of indiscipline and every manifestation of indiscipline must be decisively dealt with. No act of indiscipline will go unpunished.” 
 
Ilo said that the inauguration of the court martial was in line with the vision of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Tukur Buratai, to guarantee a “professionally responsive Nigerian Army in the discharge of its constitutional roles to the nation.” 
 
The GOC said a human rights desk had been established at the division where complaints about erring military personnel from the public would be accepted and investigated.</div>

The pre-emptive attack was carried out after information was received about the devilish intention and location of the terrorists. While on a patrol to foil the attack troops encountered the terrorists at Tatakura village 20km South West of Wumbi. There was heavy exchange of fire at the end of which 9 Boko Haram terrorists were killed. 
Troops captured 3 AK-47 rifles, 1 Fabrique Nationale rifle, 1 General Purpose Machine Gun, a 60mm Mortar Tube, 1 Rocket Propelled Grenade 7 (RPG 7) Tube, 1 G3-Machine Gun and 7 Fabrique Nationale Magazines. Other recovered items also included 108 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition, 1 Energa grenade, an RPG 7 Bomb as well as three 60mm mortar bombs and 2 motor cycles.

 The statement continued: “It was also discovered that Boko Haram held a lot of people hostage in Jadda. 
 “The fighting patrol team also succeeded in freeing the hostages and recovered an AK-47 rifle with registration number OF-4814, 30 rounds of 7.62mm (Special) ammunition, 12 rounds of 7.62mm (NATO) ammunition, 14 Dane Guns, 1 motorcycle, 2 Solar panels and food storage facility.” 
 “Other items include 120 litres of AGO and packs of Panadol. 
 “Sadly, one of our soldiers suffered gunshot wound and was evacuated for further medical treatment. The Nigerian Army on Tuesday said its officer kidnapped on Sunday has been killed by his abductors. 
“The Nigerian Army wishes to regrettably inform the public that Colonel Samaila Inusa, who was kidnapped on Sunday 27th March 2016, was found dead today at about 6.00pm,” spokesperson for the Army, Sani Usman, said in a statement. 
 
“Preliminary investigation revealed that most likely the late senior officer was killed same day he was kidnapped by his abductors. This is because the body was found already decomposing around Ajyaita village off Eastern Bypass Kaduna, Kaduna State. 
“Arrangements are in progress to move the body to 44 Nigerian Army Reference Hospital, Kaduna. May His soul rest in peace, Amen. 
 
 
“We wish to state in unmistakeable terms that whoever is behind his abduction and murder would be fished out to face the full wrath of the law.” 
Mr. Inusa, a colonel, was seized in his Mercedes-Benz car by gunmen around Kamazo, along Kaduna Refinery Road, in Chikun local government area of Kaduna State on Saturday. 
 
A statement by the 1 Division of the Army had said “the abductors dropped off Colonel Inusa’s wife and left with him in his car. The car headed towards Abuja.” 
 
On Sunday, the Army offered a N500,000 reward for anyone with useful information that could lead to the rescue of Mr. Inusa. 
 
Late on, army authorities raised the reward offer to one million naira, promising to give adequate protection to anyone who provided useful information, and that such tip-off would be treated with utmost confidentiality. 
 
There were reports in Thisday newspaper on Sunday quoting an intelligence officer as saying the abduction of the officer might be a revenge mission by the Shiite Islamic sect against the Army over the deadly clash with the group in Zaria last year. 
 
But the group swiftly responded, denying responsibility for the abduction of the Colonel. 
In a statement on Monday by Ibrahim Musa, the President, Media Forum of the group, said the report linking the Shiites to the abduction was “false, unsubstantiated and mischievous claim, that looks more like a planned operation aimed at painting the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) black.” 
 
Mr. Musa added, “We wish to categorically state here that the Islamic Movement in Nigeria under the leadership of His Eminence, Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky has never, is not and will never engage in any form of crime to meet any of its objectives. Crime and criminal activities are fundamentally sinful and are not in our character. 
“The Islamic Movement knows that due to official administrative ineptitude and official negligence of constituted authority, a lot of crimes including kidnapping are prevalent in the country.”</div>

“Five people were killed on Friday, including a young girl, when Boko Haram invaded our village near Damboa town. Some women were injured. We went after them in a gun battle, some were killed but four were arrested. We brought them to Damboa,” he said.

The General Officer Commanding (GOC), 1 Division, Nigeria Army, Adeniyi Oyebade, on Friday said no fewer than 35 armed bandits have been killed in the last two months in the North West. 
Mr. Oyebade, a Major-General, who disclosed this at a news briefing in Kaduna, said 38 of the bandits were also arrested by soldiers and handed over to the police for prosecution. 
 
According to him, 6, 009 animals were recovered during the operation code-named `Sharan Daji’, while 49 bandits’ camps were destroyed. 
The GOC explained that the operation was targeted at cattle rustlers and armed bandits terrorising communities in Sokoto, Kano, Kaduna, Kebbi, Zamfara, Katsina and Kaduna, as well as Niger States. 
 
“In Niger, the 31 Artillery Brigade, which covers the axis, are deployed as a blocking force to intercept escaping cattle rustlers and bandits while also conducting fighting patrol around Pandogari-Kusherki, Gidigori and Pandogari-Mai Kujeri roads which serves as escape routes for the bandits. 
“In Kaduna state, 465 recovered animals, 16 bandits arrested, nine bandits killed, seven weapons recovered and eight camps destroyed. 
“In Zamfara state, 1,443 animals were recovered, 19 bandits arrested, 13 bandits killed, eight weapons recovered and 20 camps destroyed. 
 
“In Katsina/Kano States, 4, 101 animals recovered, four bandits arrested, 13 bandits killed, 21 assorted guns, including three AK 47 Rifles, local weapons and bows and arrows and 10 and 11 camps destroyed in Katsina and Kano respectively,” he said 
He said during the course of the various operations, the military lost one Sgt Nansel Dangnap of 2 Battalion, while three soldiers sustained varying degrees of injuries. 
 
The GOC said a number of terrorists fleeing from the North East were also arrested. 
He warned organizations and groups in the zone to desist from any act capable of causing breakdown of law and order, stressing that “under my watch any act that threatens the rule of law will not be tolerated.” 
 
“We will continue to work hard to ensure the security of lives and property within our area of responsibility to enhance socio-economic growth and development in line with the vision of President Muhammadu Buhari.”

A witness has told a Federal High Court in Abuja that N1.7 billion meant for the payment of Nigerian Air Force personnel was diverted by a former Chief of Air Staff, Alex Badeh, on a monthly basis. 
 
The witness, Salisu Abdullahi, who was director of finance at the Nigerian Air Force between October 2010 and December 2013, said personnel salary received from the federal government was N4 billion, while what the actual salaries amounted to just above N2 billion. 
“Out of the balance of about N1.6 to N1.7 billion, the sum of N558 million was taken to Mr. Badeh’s personal residence at Niger Barracks after it is exchanged to dollars,” he said. 
He added that the balance of the money was returned to Mr. Badeh for further directive, saying expenditures made from the remaining money, were usually approved by the Chief of Air Staff through the procurement and planning committee. 
Mr. Abdullahi said Mr. Badeh mostly didn’t confirm receipt of the sum of N558 million in writing. 
 
“The only instruction he gives in writing are those requests forwarded in writing from branches and units for approval,” he said. 
“Where such approvals are given, they are forwarded to my office for necessary payments,” Mr. Abdullahi said. 
 
Mr. Abdullahi further said that N120 million was at one time allotted for his office on a monthly basis, but that he rejected the offer, since he did not see any need for the money. 
He added that his principal, Mr. Badeh, purchased several houses, including a shopping complex at the cost of N1.1 billion, named under the title of the second defendant, a company named “Iyalikam”. 
Mr. Abdullahi said the shopping complex was purchased on the directive of Mr. Badeh, and that it was located at 600, Ogun Rivers Street, Maitama, Abuja. 
He also added that he later discovered that Mr. Badeh’s son, Alex Junior, was to use the upper part of the complex as a restaurant. 
According to Mr. Abdullahi, another building which Mr. Badeh said he would use as his office was purchased at N650 million, and under the name of a certain engineer, Mustafa Yarima. 
Another building was purchased for his son, Alex Junior, at N260 million and renovated at N60 million, while N90 million was used for the purchase of furniture. 
 
A fourth building was purchased at N330 million for Mr. Badeh’s second son, identified merely as ‘Kam’ after a previous property was purchased for Mr. Kam at N240 million which he did not approve of. 
Two other houses were also purchased in Kaduna, both of whom were uncompleted building. 
All the houses were bought under the name of a third party, and mostly paid for, from the sum of N558 million remitted to Mr. Badeh monthly. 
 
Mr. Abdullahi also revealed that Mr. Badeh’s official salary was within N2 million, but stated that he received absolutely no financial reward for taking N558 million to Mr. Badeh at his residence. 
After the prosecution concluded its examination of the witness, the defence counsel sought the approval of the court to adjourn the case, saying that some of the information contained in the witness’ evidence were not in the stated proof of evidence. 
Mr. Badeh’s lawyer, Samuel Zibiri, asked the court to permit him time to prepare the necessary questions for cross examination in the interest of fair hearing, giving the fact that new details had emerged that he would need time to properly analyse. 
 
The counsel to the second defendant, Simon Olugunorsiha, also asked that he be given time to see to his health. 
The judge, Okon Abang, adjourned the case to March 23, for cross examination of the first Prosecution Witness.

A Federal High Court in Abuja has granted Nigeria’s former Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh, a N2 billion bail. 
 
Judge Okon Abang ruled that Mr. Badeh presents two Abuja-based sureties with N1 billion each, in addition to surrendering his international passport. 
Mr. Badeh is facing corruption charges, accused of receiving N3.9 billion as part of $2.1 billion arms money allegedly diverted by former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki. 
 
He denies the allegation. 
On Thursday, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, said it recovered $1 million from Mr. Badeh’s apartment, a claim the former defence chief strongly denied. 
The prosecuting counsel, Rotimi Jacobs, said the money was found in one of the properties confiscated from Mr. Badeh. 
But Mr. Badeh’s lawyer, Samuel Zibiri, said the claim was to seek “media hype”. 
 
“My lord, he should argue his case on bail application and avoid undue media hype. This is an allegation and the applicant has said no $1 million was found in his house,” he stated. 
 
He said the former defence chief, a retired Air Chief Marshal, would not jump bail, and should be granted bail without conditions, following from the example of former Interior Minister, Abba Moro. 
Mr. Zibiri argued that the condition of the prison facility, where his client was kept, was unfavourable. 
The EFCC lawyer, Mr. Jacobs, argued against bail for Mr. Badeh, saying a strong case had been established against him. 
 
He referred the court to pages 76 and 99 of the proof of evidence before it, saying the pages show how Mr. Badeh instructed the director of finance of the Nigerian Air Force to convert public funds to dollars for use in purchasing a property for Mr. Badeh. 
“My lord, the first property was bought for at N1.4 billion and the finance director paid for it,” Mr. Jacobs said. 
 
“$1 million was recovered from the property; we will tender it as evidence,” he added. 
Mr. Jacobs said it was likely for Mr. Badeh to jump bail in view of the evidences against him. He also said Mr. Badeh had not met conditions for bail on health grounds. 
The judge overruled the argument, and granted bail to Mr. Badeh.</div>

Soldiers flog, boot protesting women in Delta State.

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'>EKU— REMINISCENT of the military era, about 10 soldiers flogged and used boots on hundreds of women protesting at Ovre-Eku (Iwevbo) community yesterday, over a land which had been in dispute for years between Edo and Delta states. 
 
The women, numbering over 500, wearing black clothing, had converged at Eku community from where they marched to the disputed land carrying a coffin covered in palm fronds to express their displeasure over alleged sale of the land to an oil company. 
 
Getting to the spot at about 10:45a.m., they were accosted by the soldiers, who ordered the women to leave the site. The women insisted on being addressed by a representative of the company. 
 
Angered by the stand of the women, a senior military officer identified to be the Unit Commander at the site, Lt. E. D. Oworobo, cocked his riffle, threatened to shoot and then ordered his men to flog the women. 
 
Two journalists, including a Vanguard correspondent, who had accompanied the protesting women, suffered the same fate. The soldiers chased the fleeing women into adjoining bushes at the site. 
 
The aged among the women, some in their 80s, who could not run, were trampled on by the soldiers and others flogged with tree stems. 
 
Unit Commander’s reaction 
 
When the Unit Commander, Lt. E. Oworobo, was contacted by this reporter to comment on the way and manner the women were treated, he described the reporter as an “idiot and a madman.” 
 
Meanwhile, the soldiers again went berserk at about 11:30a.m., invaded parts of Ovre-Eku community, destroyed nine motorcycles and 13 bicycles, while residents of the community fled, following the arrival of the soldiers in a white Toyota Hilux van.

“When I say defeat, it doesn’t necessarily mean that there won’t be hitches here and there. We have entered the mop-up stage of our operation”. 
 
“The second task is to support the civil authorities in caring and protecting the Internally Displaced Persons and to help the civil authorities in restoring normalcy and rebuilding those areas that have been liberated. 
 
“It has already commenced in places like Bama, Gamboru Ngala, Baga, Mongonu and most of those areas are deserted because they are afraid that they could be attacked. 
“So, we will embark on confidence building to encourage them to come back by assisting the civil authorities”. 
 
He acknowledged the support of the elders and urged them and the entire Borno people to be patient with the military particularly on measures initiated to tackle the insurgents. 
 
He said measures such as the closure of markets and curfews were all taken to address gaps observed in the military operation. 
Chairman of the Borno Elders Forum, Amb. Gaji Galtimari appreciated the efforts of the military in containing the menace of insurgency in the north-east. 
 
He said that the military had succeeded in decimating the insurgents to the extent that the regular bomb and gun attacks were limited in parts of the region. 
 
Galtimari said Borno elders were in support of measures adopted by the military in finally ending the menace of Boko Haram and pledged to do more to support the military

 Ndigbara is currently on the run from military authorities following the invasion of his residences by soldiers from 2 Brigade, Nigerian Army on January 11, 2016. 
 Leadership reports that the former militant is seeking an order of the Federal High Court sitting in Port Harcourt to enforce his fundamental human rights by halting further harassment and invasion of his homes by soldiers. 
 The legal representative of the ex-militant, Eugene Ode, told newsmen in Port Harcourt that Ndigbara probably would have been summarily executed by soldiers had he been found at home when his home was invaded following the manner his family was beaten and battered. 
 Ode faulted the military for placing a bounty on Ndigbara without issuing any statement on why he is wanted by the authorities. 
 He said: For us, we think this way beyond the way of the law and we are here to enforce his fundamental human right. Don’t forget, this man is an ex-agitator. He was one of the first to embrace the Amnesty Programme by the late President Yaradua. This man has surrendered.’’ 
 Meanwhile, nine people were reportedly killed following a heavy gun battle that broke out in Bori, Rivers state earlier on Tuesday, February 23. 
 Daily Post reports that the battle was between soldiers and militants suspected to be supporters of the ex-militant leader, Solomon Ndigbara. 
 Four people were feared dead at Yeghe in Gokana, the home town of the embattled ex-militant, says local sources.</div>

Akintoye, who is currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Yaba area of Lagos state was said to have beaten to stupor as one of the military men identified as Uko Obasi, from the tailoring department of the Ordinance Barracks, Yaba, allegedly kicked Akintoye repeatedly near Tejuosho Market, Ojuelegba Road, Yaba. 
 
The assault reportedly occurred at about 6pm on Thursday at the time Akintoye was on his way returning from work, during which the lawyer was dispossessed of a sum of N350,000 he had collected from a client. 
 
It was gathered that at that time, Akintoye, who held a folder containing the money, was trekking home from work and the soldiers, who were behind him, reportedly ordered him to walk faster. 
 
The legal practitioner reportedly replied that he was not obstructing their movement because the road was wide enough for everyone to pass, a statement which infuriated the soldiers who pounced on him in revenge. 
 
A crowd which had gathered at the scene held on to Obasi when the lawyer fell and became still, while the soldier’s colleague fled the scene. 
 
The pair were soon taken to the Ordinance Barracks and the authorities assured that they would get back to the lawyer after carefully investigating the matter which was also later reported at the Sabo Police Division. 
 
The 33-year-old lawyer, who spoke with The Punch after his ordeal, explained that the soldiers were at the verge of escaping from the scene during the encounter, noting also that his wallet and folder containing about N350,000, paid by one of his clients, has gone missing. 
 
“I was coming from work on Thursday around 6pm. Near the Yaba Market, I heard a voice behind me saying, ‘Walk faster. Do you think this is your sitting room?’ I replied, ‘The space is wide enough for anyone to pass’. I received a slap from behind immediately. 
 
“When I looked back and saw two soldiers, I said, ‘What is my offence?’ I received another slap and they started beating me up. 
 
“They were with daggers. They punched me and kicked me with their boots. People were shouting that I would die. 
 
“In the commotion, my wallet and ATM cards were stolen. My folder containing N350,000 was stolen. It was given to me as part payment by a client. Blood was streaming down my face. When they saw the blood, they wanted to escape. 
 
“But I held on to one of them. People gathered and started taking photographs. The other soldier escaped. I did not know that a senior police officer was around and watching,” the battered lawyer narrated. 
 
On what transpired after being taken to the barracks, Akintoye said: “It was the police officer who took both of us to the barracks. At the barracks, one of the senior military officers said I was a ‘bloody civilian’ and could be beaten up by soldiers. 
 
“Another officer apologised and took my contact details, saying the military would get back to me. I went to a hospital immediately to get treatment for the injuries I sustained.” 
 
Colonel Kingsley Samuel, spokesperson for the Nigerian Army, Division 81, in his reaction, said: “We are going to investigate the matter. But let the lawyer give a better description of the barracks so we can be sure where the soldiers are attached.” 
 
This is not the first time in recent weeks that soldiers have battered innocent citizens as a surprising video surfaced recently of a female cadet maltreating a young man for saying that she is beautiful.

Niger Delta ex-war lord, High Chief Government Ekpemupolo alias Tompolo has sounded another note of warning to President Muhammadu Buhari to stop playing with fire that will plunge the nation into armed conflict following the deployment of armed soldiers in the Niger Delta communities. 
He said the deployment of soldiers particularly in Gbamaratu community is annoying and urge the president to unconditionally withdraw soldiers from the region without further delay. 
 
A visibly angry Tompolo said if the soldiers deployed in the communities are there to effect his arrest, that is a sheer waste of time because it is a mission impossible that would escalate into conflict in the end.

On Tuesday, troops of 81 Battalion and 251 Task Force Battalion patrol team, cleared Boko Haram camps located at Komala, Dole, Kumshi and Moadori around the fringes of Alagarno forest. 
 
The troops killed two Boko Haram members and captured another two; Mustapha Busuru (50 years old) and Usman Abubakar (56 years old) at Dole village. 
The army also brought down all Boko Haram terrorist flags hoisted in the villages and destroyed them. They also recovered two Toyota pick-up vans, 40 motorcycles, Improvised Explosives Making Devices (IEDs), stockpile of foodstuffs and fuel dump. 
 
The patrol team also recovered horses and donkeys used for transportation by Boko Haram 
In response to a distress call of an attack by Boko Haram on Kuda Village along Butuku Road, troops of 143 Battalion swung into action. Unfortunately, the terrorists fled after setting the village on fire which led to the death of an elderly woman. 
The escaped insurgents allegedly regrouped and attempted to cross through Magar Bridge but, they were pre-empted by elements of the battalion who killed two members and wounded several others. 
 
Three soldiers and four locals sustained injuries, while the troops recovered one Toyota Buffalo vehicle mounted with an Anti-Aircraft Gun with registration number 081375, one General Purpose Machine Gun (GPMG) with registration number 132042, a loaded G3 rifle magazine and 30 rounds of 7.62mm (NATO) ammunitions link. 
 
Both military and wounded civilians are receiving treatment at the unit’s Regimental Aid Post. 
In Kaduna, Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant- General Tukur Buratai commanded his men fighting insurgents in the North-east to hold liberated territories and consolidate on successes already recorded. 
 
The army boss further stated that renewed efforts to clear remnants of Boko Haram members in Borno, Yobe and Adamawa States are also in top gear. He disclosed that the insurgents are now mixing with civilian populace thereby making the process a bit slow and difficult. 
Buratai, who stated this at the inauguration of United States of America (USA) training assistance to selected units of the army, held at Nigerian Army School of Infantry (NASI), Jaji in Kaduna added that onslaught against the terrorist group by combined forces of the NA and Nigerian Air Force in past months has degraded their capability. 
“All that is required is the bold action from our troops to hold liberated territories. “As you are aware, the security challenges that have confronted the Nigerian Army in contemporary times are remarkably different from the ones we have in the past. 
 
“So, I implore you to work hard towards achieving the goals of this training. I am confident the US training team with the support of the Commandant and In structors of NASI are prepared to give you the highest quality of instruction. Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) and special guest of honour at the inauguration, General Abayomi Olonisakin , noted that the partnership between the US Army and Nigerian armed forces is strategically borne out of shared commitment to counter terrorism and violent extremism. 
In his remarks, the US Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle, emphasised the need for other nations to join hands with Nigeria in the fight against terrorism, as Nigeria cannot do it alone. 
About 250 soldiers from 145 Battalion of NA are participating in the first phase of the training scheduled to end in 12 weeks. 
Meanwhile, soldiers on counter-insurgency war in the North east were said to have killed dozens of Boko Haram members after they laid ambush for them at one of their crossing points around Sambisa. 
 
The soldiers were said to have laid the ambush in one of their strongholds at Kamala and Musafanari area of Borno state. 
During the shootout, several terrorists were killed while others fled with gunshot wounds. The soldiers recovered one AK-47, riffle, six motorcycles, two bags, assorted food items and various Improvised Explosive Making Devices (IEDs). 
A statement by the Acting director of army public relations, Col. Sani Usman said “the recovered items clearly shows that the terrorists were out for a nefarious mission which was aborted by the timely ambushes.” 
 
Usman noted that the offensive against the terrorist group was still ongoing.</div>
