She was raped by her biological father who threatened that she would die if she opened up to anyone about the matter. But she braved the odds to cry out and paid the ultimate price as she died with her five-month-old pregnancy.</div><div><br></div><div>Although her 42-year-old errant father, Jacob Alonge, a farmer and native doctor, has been committed to prison, she did not live to see the man that caused her pains walk into jail.</div><div><br></div><div>In the words of D. Adamaigbo, the presiding Magistrate at Edo Family Court, “her father threatened her that if she revealed to the public she would die. She actually revealed it and she died.”</div><div><br></div><div>The late Gift was raped by her father in 2017, and he threatened her by administering an oath of silence on her. He continued to rape her until she turned 15 and got her pregnant. The bizarre incident occurred at Ososo village in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.</div><div><br></div><div>The first time he raped Gift, according to the poor girl’s statement to the police, it was in the bush. He was said to have told Gift that they were going for prayers. In her statement as quoted in court, she said: “My father, by name Jacob Alonge, used to wake me up at night and said I should follow him for prayers. When we got inside the bush, he would force me and have sexual intercourse with me.”</div><div><br></div><div>In the second statement she made at the state police headquarters, she said: “He threatened me not to tell anybody, and that if I did, he would kill me. One night, he called me and put me on top of a stone and used a razor blade to shave my private part and threatened me not to tell anybody.”</div><div><br></div><div>The bubble, however, burst when Gift became pregnant last year. Members of the Braveheart Initiative Organisation (BHI) took up the case. They arranged for counselling and ante-natal care while her father was arrested.</div><div><br></div><div>At the Ososo Police Station, he was said to have made a statement confessing to the crime of incest, and the case was transferred to the family unit of the State CID in Benin City. Gift was offered shelter by her maternal uncle, Mr. Ukere Adagbogu, who took a keen interest in his niece’s case and was also determined to get justice for her.</div><div><br></div><div>Jacob was subsequently arraigned before the court and he pleaded guilty to the charges. The Magistrate fixed judgement for January 16, 2019</div><div><br></div><div>Tragedy, however, struck on the day fixed for judgment as Gift, her uncle Ukere Adagbogu, Rhoda Braimoh, Promise Ezekiel and the driver of their vehicle, died in an auto crash on their way from Igarra to the court in Benin City to witness the judgment.</div><div><br></div><div>On hearing the news about his daughter’s death, Alonge changed his guilty plea to not guilty, as he presumed that all the witnesses to the case were dead. At the Family Court, Jacob pleaded not guilty to the amended charges preferred against him.</div><div><br></div><div>In the three count amended charges read at the Family Court, Jacob was accused of being in possession without lawful and reasonable excuse, fetish wrap of his late daughter’s pubic hair at Okeh Quarter in Ososo village, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.</div><div><br></div><div>Jacob was accused of having unlawful and indecent carnal knowledge of his biological daughter against the order of nature, and in the process impregnated her. He was said to have repeatedly had carnal knowledge of his daughter without her consent.</div><div><br></div><div>The offences are punishable under sections 213, 358 and 214 of the Criminal Code cap 48 Laws of the defunct Bendel State of Nigeria now applicable in Edo State. On August 1 when judgment was delivered, Jacob was sentenced to 21 years imprisonment.</div><div><br></div><div>Alonge was convicted on all three count charges of unlawful possession of fetish wrap of the victims’ pubic hair, unlawfully and indecently having canal knowledge of his biological daughter, repeated sexual assault and for impregnated her.</div><div><br></div><div><div>Delivering judgment in the case, the Presiding Magistrate, D.I Adamaigbo (Mrs) sentenced Jacob Alonge to five years on count one, two years and 14 years respectively on count two and three. The jail terms are to run consecutively.</div><div><br></div><div>Adamaigbo said: “He consecutively had sex with her who is his own daughter and got her pregnant and thereby subjected her to shame and emotional stress. May her soul rest in peace.</div><div><br></div><div>“To serve as a deterrent to others and would be offenders, we are of the opinion that the defendant should not have a space in a decent society.”</div><div><br></div><div>Adamaigbo said the statement of the victim and the evidence of the PW1 confirmed what the victim said that “she was five months pregnant and that she was demoralized, emotionally distressed is sufficient corroboration that the victim was indeed sexually assaulted.</div><div><br></div><div>“It has been established beyond reasonable doubt that the accused had canal knowledge of the victim as she said in her statement. Her statement was corroborated by the statement of the police in evidence.</div><div><br></div><div>“The convict admitted in his statement and the law is that evidence admitted need no further proof. The defence that he was lured into the crime by his own daughter is an afterthought. We therefore find him guilty of each of the counts.”</div><div><br></div><div>Reacting to the judgment, Executive Director of BHI, Priscillia Usiobaifo, said: “We have seen how resilience can prove worthwhile. I am very happy that there is no option of fine because we have had several cases that we won and they would give options of fine. This has encouraged us, and those that died did not die in vain.”</div></div>

Ojezua, who said the entire process of the election had been nothing but peaceful, said it was “a pity that PDP expected to win in a state that it had run down”.<br/>

<br/>The DMO figures had ranked Edo State as the third most indebted state in the country in terms of  sub-national foreign debts with a total of $179.52million, with the governorship candidate of the PDP, Pastor Osagie‎ Ize-Iyamu, saying that his position that Edo was one of the most indebted states, has been vindicated.<br/>
<br/>But in a statement in Benin City on 23rd Friday, the state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Prince Kassim Afegbua, noted that: “following the declaration by the Debt Management Office that Edo state’s foreign debt profile ranks third among indebted states in the country, the Peoples Democratic Party that plunged Edo state into huge debts has been upbeat, saying they have been vindicated. How wrong? We do not only find PDP’s assertion ridiculous but utterly uninformed.”<br/>
“First, Edo state was categorised as one of the wealthiest states in the country following our holistic reforms in the area of Internally Generated Revenue, which saw a huge improvement in our Internally Generated Revenue portfolio.<br/>
“Secondly, we do not borrow funds to pay salaries like PDP state Governors, especially in the South-South geo-political zone. Our loans are tied to specific infrastructural development projects aimed at improving the lives of our people. Unlike in the past during the era of the PDP when loans were sourced and shared amongst party chieftains, the present thinking has altered the ugly narrative of pocketing loans; we have built infrastructure in critical sectors of the Edo economy.<br/>
“A critical look at the three top states of Lagos, Kaduna and Edo would readily reveal the huge infrastructural developments in those three states. While it has been difficult for PDP states to attract World Bank loans because of the rigorous screening it entails, PDP states in the South-South have been taking loans from Commercial Banks with neck-breaking interest rates. Our foreign loans attract 1% interest rate with a 10-year moratorium. The representatives of the World Bank are not only proud of Edo state for utilising her loans diligently; they have commended the Comrade Governor at different times for applying probity and accountability in the management of Edo resources.<br/>
“Through such fiscal assistance from World Bank, we were able to address the Queen Ede erosion menace, Auchi erosion and the Ekenhuan erosion menaces. We have built infrastructure across the length and breadth of the state and are proud to say that our records of performance would remain indelible in the minds of present and future generations of Edo people.<br/>
“We are not like the PDP that took loans during their ten years reign and shared amongst their party chieftains.<br/>
They sucked Edo people to the point that it took the intervention of God and man to get the state back on track. We are certainly not reckless financial suckers like the PDP. We are proud to say that we have applied our loans for the purpose they were meant. It will interest PDP chieftains to note that under the Oshiomhole administration, we have repaid billions of naira loans acquired during the inglorious years of the PDP”, the statement said.<br/>

Nick Dazang, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Deputy Director for Voter Education and Publicity, disclosed this in an interview with NAN on Tuesday in Abuja.<br/>
Mr. Dazang said the decision to accept Mr. Ize-Iyamu, candidate of the PDP National Caretaker Committee, led by Ahmed Makarfi, was informed by the court’s decision on the matter.<br/>
“The commission collected the nomination from Makarfi-led faction because he has a court judgment that says INEC should accept his candidate.<br/>
“Secondly, you will recall that it is only his own faction of PDP primary that the commission monitored,” Mr. Dazang said.<br/>
The PDP has been rocked by an internal crisis, with two factions laying claim to the party’s national leadership.<br/>
A faction led by Ali Modu Sheriff submitted the name of Matthew Iduoriyekwemwen as its candidate for the Sept. 10 Edo polls, after the Makarfi faction had submitted Mr. Ize-Iyamu’s name.<br/>
The Makarfi’s group, supported by all organs of the party, including the Governors’ Forum and the Board of Trustees, conducted its primary on June 20 in Benin and elected Mr. Ize-Iyamu as candidate.<br/>
On June 29, at another primary that was not supervised by INEC as required by the Electoral Act, Mr. Sheriff’s faction picked Mr. Iduoriyekwemwen as the party’s candidate for the Sept. 10 election.<br/>
INEC had said earlier that it would not accept any candidate until a court decides on the matter.<br/>
A Federal High Court in Port Harcourt on July 4 held that the May 21 national convention that removed Mr. Sheriff as chairman and constituted the National Caretaker Committee was duly constituted.<br/>
The court also declared that the dissolution of the National Working Committee and the National Executive Committee by that convention was valid.<br/>
In the judgment, Justice Abdullahi Liman declared that the appointment of the caretaker committee to oversee the party’s affairs was legal and in line with the provisions of PDP Constitution.<br/>
Mr. Dazang said on Tuesday that the commission had received nomination forms from 19 political parties including the All Progressives Congress (APC).<br/>
He listed others as: Action Aliance (AA), African Democratic Congress (ACD), Advance Congress of Democrats (ACD), Allied Congress Party of Nigeria (ACPN), All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA), Citizens Popular Party (CPP), Independent Democrats (ID) among others.<br/>

He said this while fielding questions from state house correspondents after a closed door meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari.<br/>

“I don’t think the state should submit to blackmail, for me I think the state‎ should be respected,” he said.<br/>

“When you are dealing with security issues the options are not best discussed in the media. What I can say is that this president deserves the support of everyone and there is no part of Nigeria that can be better off without the other part.”<br/>

“The sooner we accept this reality the better it is for all of us. The days of ethnic champions and imaginary divide will not help anyone. I believe that the president has shown leadership, he has shown determination to keep the country going, for once we are enjoying respect ‎in world capitals, in different continents.<br/>

“We don’t need to be security experts to accept the universal truth that wherever there is insecurity there will be no investment‎ because no investor will go to where is unsafe. And where there is no investment poverty will be endemic because there will be no job for our people.<br/>

“I appeal to all of us in the south-south, we need to wake up, it is for our own self interest that we make the region the most investor friendly that even challenges that we face, the assets being destroyed is not just national assets, it is our own assets. It is what makes the south-south the hub of the Nigerian economy and when we neutralise that through whatever pretenses, there is something Abiola said which I think is apt in this case, that is, a tree falls in the forest chances are it can only kill somebody in that forest,‎ not somebody at home.<br/>

The committee was also charged with the responsibility of proffering solutions to the issues and restore normalcy to the party in the state.<br/>

The committee comprised Mr. Olagunsoye Oyinlola, chairman; Senator Osita Izunaso, vice chairman while Senator Victor Ndoma Egba (SAN), Hajiya Fatimah Mohammed and Alhaji Ahmed Abdullahi are members. Inaugurating the committee, APC National Chairman, Chief John Odigie-Oyegun, said arresting the situation in Edo had been a matter of concern at all levels of the party.<br/>

“Go to Edo State to restore normalcy within the fold of APC in that state. It is a critical state strategically; I hope I won’t be misinterpreted if I say it is a must-win,’’ Odigie-Oyegun charged the committee. He assured the committee that the party would provide a level-playing field for every player in the Edo elections and would not discriminate against anyone.<br/>

“I want you to go with the definite knowledge that at the national level, we are determined that there will be free, fair primary and a level playing field for all.”<br/>
<br/>
Responding, the committee chairman said: “We realise that it is very necessary for peace to prevail in every chapter of our party. This assignment will be carried out diligently and without fear or favour. The trust you have in us to carry out this assignment will not be misplaced.’’<br/>

Edo had been enmeshed in stories of disaffection between Governor Adams Oshiomhole and his Deputy, Dr. Pius Odubu. In a similar circumstance, the House of Assembly last Tuesday impeached its Speaker, Victor Edoror, with 16 out of 24 members endorsing it. He was replaced with the only female member of the house, Mrs Elizabeth Ativie.<br/>

Meanwhile, new Speaker of the House of Assembly, Mrs. Elizabeth Ativie, was yesterday sworn in by the Clerk, Mr. Ugiagbe in a ceremony witnessed by the former Speaker, Mr. Edoror. The new speaker who thanked the lawmakers for expressing their confidence in her leadership‎, promised to lead the Sixth Assembly with transparency, adding that the House would work with other arms of government to ensure that the state reaches an enviable height.<br/>

She also urged members to ensure that the legislature ‎carried out its constitutional role in the interest of the people of the state, even as she announced the lifting of the suspension of the former speaker. In the spirit of oneness, in the spirit of breaking new grounds and working harder and in the spirit of reconciliation, I wish to announce that the suspension of the member representing Esan Central, Victor Edoror, is hereby lifted. “So, he can come in and join us in business of the development of our fatherland,” Ativie said.<br/>

The bishops who spoke against the backdrop of last Friday’s attempt on the life of John Cardinal Onaiyekan, Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, said the appeal became urgent following the brazenness with which the herdsmen commit atrocities in the state without  adequate security checks.<br/>
<br/>
Cardinal Onaiyekan was attacked by suspected herdsmen as he was returning from the 10th anniversary of the enthronement of Akubueze as a bishop and ceremony marking the creation and 10 years anniversary of the Diocese of Uromi along the Benin-Ekpoma road.<br/>
<br/>
“We thank God that Cardinal Onaiyekan survived the attacks of some criminal elements last week on the Benin- Ekpoma road. If something had happened to him, what would have been the story? We thank God nothing happened and we are using this opportunity to appeal to the President to provide adequate security for the citizens of Edo State,” Akubueze said, in an interview in Benin City.<br/>
<br/>
The Catholic Archbishop stressed that the responsibility of a government is to secure her people stressing that “what we are asking for is not too much for our president. If there is no security of lives and property, no investments or meaningful economic development can take place in the state and the nation at large. We need security and we are demanding that from our government.”<br/>
<br/>
Akubueze noted that the spate of attacks by the so-called herdsmen across the country “is becoming frightening,” adding that there was an urgent need by the state and federal government to deal with the issue of security to protect lives and property of Nigerians with all seriousness.<br/>
<br/>
Recounting the ordeal, the driver to Onaiyekan who simply identified himself as Segun said, the attack happened along the Benin-Ekpoma road close to Ehor about 5.00pm last Friday.<br/>
<br/>
His words: “We left Benin for Uromi, and about 5.00pm on the fateful day, I think very close to Ehor, I saw a big pothole and decided to slow down the vehicle. I would have passed the spot with speed but because the cardinal was sleeping, I decided to slow down the vehicle so that he won’t wake up. Suddenly, I saw three men come out of the palm tree plantation by the road side and started shooting at the vehicle. I looked ahead of me, two of them were firing from a distance at the vehicle and I looked behind me another one was firing at the vehicle from behind, so I decided to use reverse gear.<br/>
<br/>
“The other vehicles, who saw me coming with reverse started clearing off the road and when I got to a safe distance, I decided to stop the vehicle and people started running to see what had happened. It was then we realised that the bullets shattered the left passenger window glass and made huge holes on the panel of the door. We just thank God nothing happened to the cardinal or any of us in the vehicle.”</div>

The two communities, Uneme-Ekpedo and Bekuma-Okpameri, had the fracas on Wednesday after some members quarreled over mango.<br/>
It was gathered that four persons from Uneme-Ekpedo community went to a bush to pluck mangoes but one of them was killed by youths from Bekuma-Okpameri community who claimed the mango tree belonged to them.<br/>
<br/>
Peeved by the killing, youths from Uneme-Ekpedo were said to have mobilized and attacked Bekuma-Okpameri attacking residents and set houses ablaze.<br/>
<br/>
The palace of the traditional ruler of Bekuma-Okpameri, HRH Moses Alabi, was set ablaze.<br/>
<br/>
Persons injured in the attacked are now receiving treatment at an emergency camp at Lampese, a neighboring community.<br/>
A source said, “As I am talking to you, there is nobody in Bekuma-Okpameri. It was unbelievable. The youths have completely sacked the community and residents are now camped in Lampese.”<br/>
<br/>
Edo State Commissioner of Police, Chris Ezike, confirmed the incident and said a fact finding police team has been sent to the community to arrest the perpetrators.<br/>
News source added that the police held talks with the two traditional rulers.</div>

Mrs. Uwaifo who retired from Uwelu Primary School, Benin, last August‎, was allegedly gunned down on Wednesday, March 15, at the gate of her residence at 27, Oviawe Street, Off Upper Siluko Road, Ogida Quarters, at about 3:00 pm,PM News reports.<br/>

The deceased, a widow, was said to have met her sudden death while returning from the hospital where she had gone to see her daughter who had just delivered a baby.<br/>
When journalists visited the scene of the incident on Friday, sympathizers who besieged the compound were placing curses on the killer of the woman.<br/>
<br/>
One of the granddaughters of the deceased (name withheld), who allegedly witnessed the gruesome murder of the victim, told journalists that she was returning from school when she sighted her grandmother also approaching the gate with the suspect following her closely.<br/>
<br/>
She further stated that as she doubled up her steps to meet up with her grandmother in order to assist her with one of the bags she was carrying when the teenager pulled out a gun from the pocket of his trousers and shot at the woman from behind.<br/>
She however said she identified the suspect as the son of their neighbour whose family has been at loggerheads with the Uwaifos.<br/>
<br/>
She also alleged that members of the suspect’s family have severally threatened to kill the woman and that the threat was reported at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Benin City, last year.<br/>
The State Police Command Public Relations Officer, DSP Abiodun Osifo, who confirmed the murder of the retired headmistress, identified the suspect as “one Happy Agbangbanyan, a teenage cultist and serial killer on police wanted list.”<br/>
He added that the police are already on his trail.</div>
