They told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) that dates fruit, when taken appropriately by men, could also improve health conditions in many other ways. 
 
Dr Aminu Kazeem, a sexual health therapist who works at Energy for Sex Clinic in Lagos said men who had performance problems should incorporate dates in their diet. 
 
He said “a date fruit is a one-seeded fruit of the date palm tree, which is botanically known as Phoenix dactylifera and belongs to the family of Palmae (Arecaceae) plant. 
 
“The common English names are dried dates, dates, date palm, etc; usually oblong, with varying sizes, shapes, colours, consistencies and quality.

“Eating dates will promote sperm quality and quantity as it is one of the best natural fruits used for male fertility. 
 
“It also increases the size of testes in men and the size of breast in women. 
 
“Consuming the fruit can help to treat sexual disorders because it is a natural aphrodisiac.” 
 
He explained that dates contained high levels of estradiol and flavonoid which aid sperm motility and increase sperm count. 
 
He also urged men who want to improve their masculinity to eat the fruit, stressing that “sexual health is important for both husband and wife for a good and everlasting relationship.” 
 
A nutritionist, Mrs Toyin Adeola, also said that eating dates could treat sexual impotence, help to improve sexual activities and increase the production of sex hormones. 
 
She added that the fruit was good for the health of both males and female. 
 
She said “date contains many vitamins and minerals which are essential to boost sexual power even in older persons. 
 
“The fruit is packed with amino acids for sexual stamina, as well as a good dose of fruity sugars which make them sweet.” 
 
The nutritionist, who described the best way it could be taken to achieve best result, however, advised diabetic patients to seek doctor’s advise before consuming dates. 
 
She said “it is advisable to remove the seed and grind seven or eight pieces of dates and soak in water for about 2-3 hours. 
 
“Add one glass of milk and one teaspoon of honey and drink at least once a day to boost sexual power.” 
 
She also advised both men and women to eat natural foods that could enhance sexual stamina than taking pills made with chemicals which may harm sexual health. 
 
NAN reports that the fruit is very popular in the market, especially where they hawk fruits.

She was treated in hospital but continued to suffer back pain she claimed prevented her from walking properly. The treatment involved her being buried for up to four hours a day over three days. 
"Doctors study medicine but not lightning," Ana said. "I know that getting into that hole I’m going to get better because these are ancient things." 
Her grandmother, Blanca de la Rosa said: 
"What we’re doing is taking the fire out of the light, the heat out of the energy."

Ana’s mum Milena added: 
 "Locals told me before I took her to hospital that we’d be better off burying her instead to take the energy from the lightning away. I’m praying she comes out okay. She can’t walk properly and the burns she suffered on her feet cause her pain. I trust in God." 
Local doctors have expressed their skepticism over the treatment. Walter Gomez, who works out of a clinic in the regional capital Monteria, admitted there were a lot of ancient beliefs among the community about how to cure storm victims including burial. 
"There’s no scientific proof that burying a patient who has been struck by lightning has any beneficial effects for their recover" Gomez added.

The state Commissioner for Health, Dr. Daniel Umezuruike, who confirmed the death of the boy, said the victim died after he was discharged from Federal Teaching Hospital Abakaliki, FETHA. 
 
The Commissioner described the incident as unfortunate, adding that the deceased was a day student in one of the primary schools in the state. 
Dr. Umezuruike said the boy’s parents were based in Abuja, but that the report before them did not show that the deceased travelled to meet with his parents in recent times. 
 
He also explained that the 10-year old was not rushed to the hospital immediately he became sick, adding that he responded to treatment at first and as such the hospital discharged him. 
 
Umezuruike said: “But unfortunately, he died the same day he was discharged. His case was surprising because the hospital thought he was all right after the treatment. Before he was discharged, we took his sample which later came out positive.” 
 
Umezuruike also confirmed that the case was the second recorded in the state, adding that “the first person was a student of Ebonyi State University.” 
 
He said the Ministry of Health had begun surveillance and tracing of close associates of the last victim to enable them curtail the spread of the disease in the state.</div>

The black spots on old banana peels may unlock a faster, easier diagnosis of human skin cancer, boosting survival chances, scientists said Monday. 
When bananas ripen, their skin is covered in small, round black spots caused by an enzyme known as tyrosinase. The same enzyme is present in human skin, and in greater quantities in people suffering from melanoma — a potentially deadly form of skin cancer. 
A team of scientists used this observed commonality to build a cancer scanner, which they then refined and tested at length on banana peels before moving on to human tissue. 
First, researchers at the Laboratory of Physical and Analytical Electrochemistry in Switzerland concluded that the enzyme is a reliable marker of melanoma growth. 
In the earliest stage 1 of cancer, the enzyme is not very apparent, becoming widespread and evenly distributed in stage 2, and unevenly distributed in stage 3 — by when the cancer has started spreading to other parts of the body. 
The earlier the cancer is detected, the greater the chances of survival. 
According to the American Cancer Society, people have a 10-year survival rate of 95 percent if the melanoma is detected in stage 1 — falling to 43 percent by mid-stage 3. 
The team developed a scanner and tested it on banana peel spots — which are roughly the same size as melanoma spots on human skin. 
 
“By working with fruit, we were able to develop and test a diagnostic method before trying it on human biopsies,”team leader Hubert Girault said in a statement. 
The scanner has eight flexible microelectrodes, spaced like comb teeth, that pass over the skin to measure the quantity and distribution of tyrosinase. 
“This system could obviate the need for invasive tests like biopsies,” the team said. 
Girault believes the scanner could be used one day to destroy tumours, hopefully rendering biopsies and even chemotherapy unnecessary. 
 
“Our initial laboratory tests showed us that our device could be used to destroy the cells,” he said. 
The research was published in the German science journal Angewandte Chemie.</div>

Brazil will not call off the summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro because of the Zika virus outbreak, but pregnant women should not travel to the event, the president’s chief of staff said Monday. 
 
“The risk, which I would say is serious, is for pregnant women,” Jaques Wagner, chief of staff to President Dilma Rousseff, told reporters on Monday. 
 
The Centers for Disease Control last month warned pregnant women from traveling to areas experiencing an outbreak of the virus. 
 
Despite the warnings, Wagner said those who are not pregnant should not be afraid to attend the games when they go on as scheduled in August. 
 
“We have to explain to those coming to Brazil, the athletes, that there is zero risk if you are not a pregnant woman,” Wagner said. 
 
The warning came on the same day the World Health Organization officially declared the outbreak a global health emergency. The virus, which may cause mild flu-like symptoms in some people, has been linked to birth defects, miscarriage, and stillborn infants. There is no vaccine or cure. 
 
The International Olympic Committee has not commented on the crisis. 
 
Wagner estimated researchers would create a vaccine within three to five years, the Associated Press reported. 
 
A Brazilian health official also said Monday the outbreak is worse than previously believed, Reuters reported. About 80% of people infected with Zika show no symptoms, Health Minister Marcelo Castro said. 
 
Mandatory reporting of Zika cases in Brazil is expected to begin soon, the AP reported. More than 1 million cases are estimated in Brazil. 
 
More than half a million athletes, volunteers, staff, and spectators are expected to visit Rio for the Olympics.

“At present, the most important protective measures against Zika virus are the control of mosquito populations, prevention of mosquito bites in at-risk individuals, especially pregnant women.” Dr. Chan, however, advised pregnant women to consider delaying travel to Zika virus-affected areas as well as protect themselves with safe mosquito repellant or long clothing. 
The WHO’s position came a day after the Nigerian government advised a travel restriction of its pregnant citizens to Latin America, the worst hit region since the Zika virus outbreak began late last year. 
Isaac Adewole, Nigeria’s Health Minister, ‎said the restriction would remain in place until “the situation improves.” 
 
Zika virus is transmitted via the bite of Aedes mosquitoes. The viral infection has been linked with babies born with underdeveloped brains. ‎There is currently no vaccine or drug to stop its spread. Dr.‎ Chan said that lack of vaccination; rapid, reliable diagnostic tests; and absence of population immunity in newly affected countries are causes for concern. 
 
“The (convened) experts also considered patterns of recent spread, the broad geo distribution of mosquito species that can transmit Zika virus,” she said.

The Lagos State chapter of the Environmental Health Officers Association of Nigeria on Monday said it had killed no fewer than 7,243 rats in eight major markets in the state under its ‘De-rat Market’ programme. 
 
This came as the state government called on the health officers to intensify safety awareness campaigns across the state. 
 
Speaking at a workshop on Lassa fever, which was organised by the ministry of Local Government and Community Affairs, the health workers association’s President, Samuel Akingbehin, said the 7,243 rats were killed at the Onigongbo, Oshodi, Oke-Odo, Ikotun Idanwo, Ojuwoye and Mile 12 and Alaba Rago markets. 
 
 
 
Akingbehin said de-rating the markets was part of the association’s efforts to curb the spread of Lassa fever in the state. 
 
“The exercise is strategic in our effort toward the prevention of Lass fever. We call on other agencies in the state to de-rat markets and stop Lassa fever.” 
 
Akingbehin appealed to traders across the state to understand the efforts of the association to rid the markets of rats and rodents. 
 
He said the plan was to de-rat markets in one local government area per day, starting from 5pm. 
 
Akingbehin said, “We decided to put the exercise in the evening due to the nocturnal nature of rodents and our members had recorded successes in the markets visited till date. 
 
“It took us about three hours to cover the Oshodi Market when our members went there for the exercise. Today, Monday, we will be visiting Suru-Alaba Market in Orile with about 400 EHOs to de-rat it.” 
 
The Commissioner for Local Government and Community Affairs, Muslim Folami appealed to the health workers to go to the nook and cranny of the state to sensitise the residents.
