SYDNEY — A British backpacker was sexually assaulted and held captive for weeks in the Australian Outback before being rescued by police who pulled over the car she was driving during a routine traffic stop, officials said Tuesday.<br/>

Queensland state police officers noticed the 22-year-old woman had facial injuries and appeared distressed when they stopped the four-wheel drive along a highway in the rural town of Mitchell on Sunday.<br/>
<br/>
The officers then found a 22-year-old man hiding in a storage alcove in the back of the vehicle, police said.<br/>
<br/>
Police say the two had met three months earlier in the northeast city of Cairns, where the man lived. But starting in January, police say, the man began subjecting the woman to a series of violent assaults.<br/>

The attacks occurred at various locations as the pair traveled the nearly 1,400 kilometers (870 miles) between Cairns and the Outback town of Roma, police spokesman CJ Roberts said.<br/>

There have been a string of high-profile attacks on foreign tourists in Australia in recent years, including the sexual assault of two backpackers on a remote beach in South Australia last year. A 60-year-old man who was charged with attempted murder, assault and kidnapping in that case goes on trial this week.<br/>

Mr Peres’s condition had deteriorated after suffering a stroke two weeks ago.<br/>

He was one of the last of a generation of Israeli politicians present at the nation’s birth in 1948.<br/>

Mr Peres won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1994 for his role negotiating the Oslo peace accords with the Palestinians a year earlier, a prize he shared with Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.<br/>
<br/>
The agreement was witnessed by former US President Bill Clinton and signed at the White House. On Wednesday Mr Clinton said on Twitter:<br/>

“I will miss Shimon Peres, my brilliant and eloquent friend. His life was a blessing to all who strive for peace…”<br/>
<br/>
Other world leaders set to attend the funeral on Friday include UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, German Chancellor Angela Merkel, French President Francois Hollande, former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto.<br/>

Mr Peres will receive a state burial at a ceremony on Friday at Mount Herzel Cemetery in Jerusalem.<br/>
<br/>
Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas sent a letter of condolence to Mr Peres’ family “expressing his sorrow and sadness”.<br/>
<br/>
“Peres was a partner in creating the peace of the brave with the late President Yasser Arafat and Prime Minister Rabin, and has made intensive efforts to reach a long-lasting peace since the Oslo agreement and until the last breath,” he said in a statement.<br/>
<br/>
It is not clear if Mr Abbas will attend the funeral.<br/>
<br/>
However, some Palestinians and others across the Middle East were not mourning his passing. Abdul Rahman Daireyeh, a resident in Ramallah, told the BBC:<br/>

“He [Peres] is a war criminal who has killed hundreds of Palestinians. He was never a man of peace. Towards the end of his life, he appeared as a man of peace but he was never that person, as he killed hundreds.”<br/>
<br/>
The militant Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas, said that Mr Peres’s death was the “end of the history of occupation”.<br/>
<br/>
Mr Peres once said the Palestinians were Israel’s “closest neighbours” and might become its “closest friends”.<br/>
<br/>
His son, Chemi, said of his father: “He served our people before we even had a country of our own. He worked tirelessly for Israel from the very first day of the state to the last day of his life.”<br/>
<br/>
Israel’s Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed his “deep sorrow” over Mr Peres’ death in a video statement.<br/>
<br/>
“As a man of peace, he worked until his final days toward reconciling with our neighbours for a better future for our children.”<br/>

Once an advocate of Jewish settlements in the occupied West Bank, Mr Peres later became a leading political dove. He often spoke of the need for compromise over territorial demands in Palestinian areas.<br/>

The Belgian government has confirmed casualties at the airport and Maalbeek metro station.<br/>

There were conflicting reports regarding the tolls, however, Frederic Van Leeuw places the figures at 31 dead and 270 wounded.<br/>

Brussels transport officials had earlier said 15 died at Maalbeek and media say up to 13 died at the airport.<br/>

Meanwhile, the mayor of Brussels is quoted to have said on Tuesday that 20 people died and 106 were injured in the blast on the metro train.<br/>

Yvan Mayeur told a news conference that 17 people were severely injured.<br/>
<br/>
Public broadcaster VRT said at least 34 people were killed in total, at the metro and the airport.<br/>
<br/>
The whole metro system was closed on Tuesday, and Belgium’s terror threat remains at its highest level.<br/>

The attack at the airport targeted an American Airlines desk and was probably carried out by a suicide bomber, Belgian federal prosecutor Frederic Van Leeuw said.<br/>

Al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden had millions of dollars stashed in Sudan and wanted most of it to be used to fund jihad, according to a handwritten will released Tuesday.<br/>
<br/>
The document was among a tranche of newly declassified files that had been seized by Navy SEALs on May 2, 2011 when they descended on Bin Laden’s hideout in the Pakistani garrison town of Abbottabad and killed him.<br/>
<br/>
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence released dozens of documents, including one they said was bin Laden’s will that deals with monies in Sudan.<br/>
<br/>
Written in Arabic on a single piece of lined paper, the signed will states bin Laden had about $29 million in Sudan, and that much of it had come from his brother.<br/>
<br/>

“I received twelve million dollars from my brother Abu Bakir Muhammad Bin (Laden) on behalf of Bin Laden Company for Investment in Sudan,” he wrote, according to the ODNI’s translation of the document.<br/>
<br/>
“I hope, for my brothers, sisters, and maternal aunts, to obey my will and to spend all the money that I have left in Sudan on jihad, for the sake of Allah.”<br/>
<br/>
Bin Laden sheltered in the Sudanese capital Khartoum for five years in the early 1990s. The ODNI did not immediately return a call seeking information on what happened to the purported hoard.<br/>
<br/>
The documents also show a growing schism between bin Laden’s lieutenants and Al-Qaeda in Iraq, and said bin Laden was planning a worldwide media campaign for the 10th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks.<br/>
<br/>
In a letter to his father dated August 8, 2008 bin Laden wrote that he was worried about being assassinated.<br/>
<br/>
“If I am to be killed, pray for me a lot and give continuous charities in my name, as I will be in great need for support to reach the permanent home,” bin Laden wrote.<br/>
<br/>
He also asks his dad for absolution, without saying what he might be regretting.<br/>
<br/>
“I would like you to forgive me, if I have done what you did not like,” he wrote.<br/>
<br/>
A first tranche of documents released last May showed bin Laden was worried about drone strikes, and in which he laid out plans to groom a new cadre of leaders.<br/>
<br/>
Bin Laden also warned that conflict with regimes in the Middle East would distract the extremists from hitting hard at what as far as he was concerned is the real enemy, America.<br/>

Thanks to an expanding population, Earth-dwellers will need to find new and creative places to live. By 2116, the report proposes that humans will have underwater cities: “With advances in the efficiency of solar cells, it is likely that this free energy source will be used to create sub-aquatic communities, breathing the oxygen they create and fueling their electrical needs through the act of hydrogen creation below the waves.” Not everyone with a view of the sea will be below the waves, though. Floating cities will move all over the world to avoid harsh climates. Future generations will also live in earth-scrapers — essentially skyscrapers in reverse, burrowing deep into the ground rather than towering in the clouds.<br/>

While the locations of future homes may be totally new, the interiors will be futuristic takes on what we’re already used to.<br/>
<br/>
Those living underground might not get as much sunlight, but their walls will still offer breathtaking views thanks to virtual reality or LED surfaces and projectors “with home interiors reading and then adapting to the inhabitants’ mood.”<br/>
<br/>
The walls themselves will be more than stationary surfaces showing you thunderstorms when you’re angry and rolling meadows when you’re stressed. “These smart walls will be able to change their own shape in 3D by using small responsive actuators pushing and pulling a flexible skin, creating temporary seats or shelves,” the authors of the report write.<br/>
<br/>
The house in general will respond to your needs, suggesting different wall configurations based on what’s happening (such as if you have guests in town and need a temporary bedroom). And each home will have its own 3D printer to make small objects on demand.<br/>
<br/>
With an increased strain on the earth’s resources, homes will become more sustainable. People will grow their own food with hydroponics and produce their own gas and water through a digestion tank using anaerobic digestion. All houses will be “off the grid,” storing energy in lithium-ion batteries generated by sun, wind, or other means.<br/>
<br/>
Thanks to drone deliveries, 3D-printed and home-grown food, holograms that project you at an office, and in-home body-scanning capsules that check you for disease, it sounds like the report predicts people will increasingly become homebodies.<br/>
<br/>
That might be a necessity if we venture into space. “Homes will increasingly become self-contained, autonomous spaces generating their own oxygen and food; we will effectively all be creating our very own little planet Earths,” says the report.<br/>

An impressive 80 percent of Nigerian respondents say they plan to celebrate Valentine’s Day, with 75 percent calling the holiday “Sweet – I like the sentiment behind it.” Of those less enamoured, thirteen percent say it’s “silly, but I put up with it ” and nine percent call it “a ridiculous money-making scheme.” Still, only three percent of Nigerians say Valentine’s Day is “stressful: I wish it would go away!”<br/>

Most respondents, who are Transfast customers based in the U.S. or Canada, say their loved one is in the U.S. (54 percent), while 36 percent say their loved one is in Nigeria. A majority (53 percent) says they will send money home for Valentine’s Day, in amounts ranging from $50 to $2,000.<br/>

Transfast, the global money transfer company, is used by millions to send money home to more than 120 countries around the globe. For Nigeria, customers can send money from a mobile device or desktop, direct to a recipient’s bank account, or for cash pick-up. Nigerian respondents plan to express their love on Valentine’s Day by communicating with their loved one via a phone call (46 percent), Skype (11 percent), Whatsapp (11 percent), Facebook message (eight percent) or Facetime (five percent).<br/>

Nigerian respondents agreed that Nigerians are by nature romantic, with 67 percent saying this was the case. A total of 46 percent say they believe in love at first sight, and twelve percent say that love at first sight has happened to them.<br/>

Most respondents say they are married (53 percent), 14 percent are dating, 12 percent are engaged and 21 percent are single. But you may not know that from their Facebook pages, because of all respondents, most say they do NOT share their relationship status on social media (53%).<br/>
