There has been public outrage against the incident, which occurred at Imiringi, Ogbia Local Government Area, Bayelsa State, since it was reported by The Nation, with many people calling for Bamekpa’s arrest and prosecution. 
Although the suspect was said to have been arrested and detained at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the state police command, there were indications that the police had not taken the matter further. 
 The statement of the abused girl was yet to be taken at press time, while the police 
was yet to meet officially with Operation Rescue (OR), the non-governmental organisation (NGO) handling the matter. Other persons indicted in the crime had also not been arrested. 
But Queen relived her ordeal in the hands of her father and called on the Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, to step in and facilitate the process of bringing the man to justice. 
 
“I want my father to be thrown into prison”, the traumatised SS1 student said. “I feel pained that a man I called my father used me many times to satisfy his sexual urge.” 
She said each time her father came, she would cry and beg him to stop but he would not listen to her. She said on one occasion, her father beat her to submission before forcing himself into her. 
Narrating how it all started in 2015, she said: “He started sleeping with me in 2015. The first time he did it, I was in my room reading when he came in. He asked me the kind of school I would like to go. Then he came close to me. “When I stood up to go, he asked me to wait and started touching me all over my body. I asked him what he was doing but he told me to keep quiet and immediately pushed me into the bed. “He tied my hands backwards. When he saw that I was shouting, he covered my mouth with his hand, He started doing it increasingly from that time. I always cried and begged him to leave me but he would not listen.” She said she was afraid to discuss her ordeal with anybody because her father threatened to kill her if she did. She, however, said the bubble burst when she began to show signs of pregnancy. 
She said: “When I became pregnant, I didn’t know. My stepmother saw the signs and suspected that I was pregnant. It was when she began to ask me who impregnated me that I told her. I learnt she has moved out of the house.” 
 
The teenager said her life became more traumatic when her father allegedly commenced the process of aborting the pregnancy. She said the method was crude and opened a chapter of health problems in her life. 
She said: “My father, seeing that I was pregnant, took me to do an abortion. He took me to Elebele and handed me over to his female friend named Peace, who took me to a house in Otu-Aba. “They did not allow me to see the process, but I saw the instruments. It was very painful. After that day, I started bleeding because he didn’t abort the pregnancy completely. I was taken back to Otu-Aba on December 5 and from there, we went to Otu-Asiga to flush the remaining one. “I discovered later that my body system had been messed up. I noticed I was no longer menstruating. It was just recently that I was taken to the Federal Medical Centre (FMC) where an operation was done on me with something like a container inserted into me. They called it a minor operation. I went back to FMC on Thursday to remove the container.” 
 
Queen said she could no longer go to school because of the problems created by her father. “I feel very bad. I want the police oga (police boss) to put him in prison. He has been doing similar things to many people,” she said. 
Queen’s nephew, David Apigi, who reported the matter to Operation Rescue, asked the police to speedily and diligently prosecute the matter. He confirmed that her niece went through an operation at FMC. 
He said: “The operation was done on her private part and a container was inserted into her. She went back on Thursday to have the container removed,” he said. 
 
The Coordinator, Operation Rescue, Princess Elizabeth Egbe, said the police had promised to effect the arrest of other suspects after taking Queen’s statement. She said the Officer in Charge, Family Unity, Edith Washington, said the statement of the violated girl would be taken after her medical check. 
She, however, said the NGO had no suspicion that the police were trying to sweep the matter under the carpet until they failed to effect arrest and commence prosecution within a reasonable time frame. 
She said initially, the policemen in charge of the case said they had no money to go to the crime scene. She, however, said the police commissioner later made a financial provision for them to go there. 
She said: “The police said they would commence the arrest of suspects after they get the girl’s statement today after her medical checks. They have not got the statement of the girl. “I don’t have any suspicion that the police are trying to hide the matter. The police said the suspect is in the state CID but we have not sighted him. The police have not been able to invite us officially for a meeting. “For now, I cannot hold them till after she has given her statement. The police said they didn’t have money to go to the crime scene but the commissioner made a provision for them to go there. If they failed to arrest the doctor and the lady, we will commence our campaign.” 
Further lamenting her condition, 27-year-old Joy, who said she was raped serially by Bamekpa when she was between six and seven years old, appealed to the police to diligently handle the matter and ensure that justice is served. 
Recalling the second time the suspect raped her, she said: “While I was playing with other children, he called me and asked me to go to his room and get pineapple. When I went to his room, he came in and shut the door. He held me and pushed me into his bed. 
“While I was shouting, he was laughing at me, boasting that even if I shouted with all my energy, nobody would come and rescue me. I shouted but nobody came.” 
When contacted, the Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Bayelsa State Command of the Nigeria Police Force, Butswat Asinim, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), said the matter was being handled by the police. He assured that the matter would not be swept under the carpet, particularly because it involves sexual abuse of a minor.</div>

But the victim (husband) dismissed her wife’s claim as untrue, saying his wife had been sleeping around. 
He said, “My wife has been sleeping around, hence I stopped sleeping with her for three weeks. It is a taboo in my tribe and she violates the laws.” 
Frank stressed that his attempts to stop her illicit affairs outside proved abortive when he took the decision to starve her of sex. 
Trouble started last Thursday when the victim returned from a visit to a friend’s house during nightfall and in his usual jokes, called his wife a lazy woman, leaving her in wide anger as she fired back to call the husband a wizard. 
Sources said while their quarrel lasted, the woman disguised to have put the quarrel behind her, dashed to the kitchen where she allegedly boiled water and unknown to the husband who was relaxing in the parlour, bathed him with the water and disappeared. 
Police officers at the Ibusa Police Division, who did not want their names in the print, confirmed that the woman disappeared with the sum of N200,000 being daily contributions the husband received and kept in her custody. 
The police said they were on the trail of the suspect while the victim is said to be receiving treatment in a private hospital.</div>

Onah, from Enugu State, was charged to court by the National Agency for Food, Drugs, Administration and Control (NAFDAC). 
 
A Microbiology graduate of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), Onah resides at No 12, Mosalashi Street, Alagbado in Lagos. 
 
She pleaded guilty to a five-count charge of possession and sale of fake drugs following her arraignment on February 15. 
 
The prosecutor, Mr Shamaki Umar, told the court that the accused sold fake brand of 200 mg of Amazon Amagyl Metronidazole tablets. 
 
When the case resumed yesterday, Umar presented the laboratory analysis of the confiscated drugs which showed that they were fake and contained 20 rather than 200 milligrams. 
 
The convict’s counsel, Mr Chinedu Moore, in his allocutus, pleaded for leniency and urged the court to temper justice with mercy. He submitted that his client was a first time offender who did not have the intent to manufacture or sell fake drugs. 
 
Amid sobs, Onah also pleaded for mercy, saying she didn’t know the drugs were fake. 
 
But the prosecutor urged the court to impose the maximum sentence, saying, “When she was asked to show the operatives of NAFDAC where the drugs were being manufactured, she took them to an unknown address that does not exist. When they eventually traced her residence, they discovered items she used in manufacturing the drugs such as weighing scales and labels. 
 
“With all intent and purpose my lord, she was manufacturing them herself. Therefore, I urge my lord to award maximum sentence as provided by law so as to serve as deterrence to others.” 
 
In his judgment, Justice Chuka Obiozor said: ”I will give you a second chance as a first offender but those who took your drugs and died had no second chance”. 
 
He reprimanded the convict for being a 2:1 UNN graduate who chose to deal in fake drugs instead of staying in the village to find something worthy to do, if she could not get a decent job in Lagos. 
 
The judge said: “Clara Onah, you are hereby sentenced to seven years imprisonment at the women wing of the Kirikiri Maximum Prison on each of the counts. They are to run concurrently starting from January 26, when you were arrested and detained. 
 
“The convict was also fined N50,000 on count five. The prosecution should hold on to the exhibits pending the elapse of the time of appeal of this judgment. At the elapse of appeal window, the prosecution should destroy it.” 
 
The offences contravened the provisions of Section 1(1) (a), 3, and 3 (1) of the Counterfeit and Fake Drugs Unwholesome Processed Foods, (Miscellaneous Provision) Act Cap 34, Laws of the Federation, 2004.</div>

Soldiers flog, boot protesting women in Delta State.

<div xmlns='http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml'>EKU— REMINISCENT of the military era, about 10 soldiers flogged and used boots on hundreds of women protesting at Ovre-Eku (Iwevbo) community yesterday, over a land which had been in dispute for years between Edo and Delta states. 
 
The women, numbering over 500, wearing black clothing, had converged at Eku community from where they marched to the disputed land carrying a coffin covered in palm fronds to express their displeasure over alleged sale of the land to an oil company. 
 
Getting to the spot at about 10:45a.m., they were accosted by the soldiers, who ordered the women to leave the site. The women insisted on being addressed by a representative of the company. 
 
Angered by the stand of the women, a senior military officer identified to be the Unit Commander at the site, Lt. E. D. Oworobo, cocked his riffle, threatened to shoot and then ordered his men to flog the women. 
 
Two journalists, including a Vanguard correspondent, who had accompanied the protesting women, suffered the same fate. The soldiers chased the fleeing women into adjoining bushes at the site. 
 
The aged among the women, some in their 80s, who could not run, were trampled on by the soldiers and others flogged with tree stems. 
 
Unit Commander’s reaction 
 
When the Unit Commander, Lt. E. Oworobo, was contacted by this reporter to comment on the way and manner the women were treated, he described the reporter as an “idiot and a madman.” 
 
Meanwhile, the soldiers again went berserk at about 11:30a.m., invaded parts of Ovre-Eku community, destroyed nine motorcycles and 13 bicycles, while residents of the community fled, following the arrival of the soldiers in a white Toyota Hilux van.

Their tough and rigorous training is designed to build their enduring capacity demanded by their calling. That is what differentiates them from civilians. That is why they are confined to the barracks except when on duty. 
 
Nigerians and indeed the world watched with shock and disgust the sub-human treatment meted out to citizen Amari Sunday, by a group of army cadets in Abuja. The young man’s ordeal was seen on a video recording which went viral on the Internet. 
 
In what appeared to be a premeditated display of barbarity, according to Amari’s narration, the army cadets, including two females, had stormed the Jabi Lake Park where he (Amari) works as a Park ‘N Pay employee of the Subsidy Reinvestment Programme (SURE P). He initially incurred the wrath of one of them for failing to walk up to the cadets within five seconds . His ordeal was compounded when he could not get to one of the female cadets within three seconds when she also summoned him due to the distance. 
 
In the video, Amari was repeatedly slapped in the face, dealt heavy blows on the head, kicked severally and dragged on the ground by his shirt’s collar. For about twenty minutes, he was made to sit backwards with his stretched hands and legs suspended. At the end of the raw bestiality, Amari was left with a bruised, and bloodied face. Wallowing in tears and self-pity, his colleagues later took him to the hospital. 
 
While we commend Amari’s courage for speaking up on a live-television show and the bravery of the unknown person that recorded the mindless torture, we demand that the episode should not be treated as another case of “mad dogs” and be left to go without due disciplinary action being meted to the erring cadets. 
 
This incident portrayed the Army in a very bad light. We, therefore, call on the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) authorities to assiduously conclude the investigation which their spokesman assured had been ordered, to ensure that this brazen display of unethical conduct is not repeated. The cadets involved in this despicable act must be identified and punished to serve as a deterrent to others. 
 
Just as the civilian populace needs the military for their defence and protection, the civilians remain the mainstay of the military. Every soldier was once a civilian and will retire back to the civilian population after service. 
 
There must be mutual regard between the two sides at all times. The Army should apologise to Amari Sunday and officially distance itself from the barbaric acts of those misguided cadets.

Suspected members of the Boko Haram sect have attacked Kuda village of Madagali local government area of Adamawa state. 
 
The terrorists killed at least 6 people and razed more than 20 houses in the attack. An aged woman was also allegedly burnt to ashes in the raging inferno. 
 
The source reports that the insurgents invaded the village at 9pm on Monday, February 15, when the villagers were preparing go to bed. They shot at fleeing villagers thus killing five persons and injuring several others. 
 
Eyewitnesses said that the heavily armed insurgents invaded the village on foot and carted away some valuables. 
 
Abubakar Kanuri, the head of Krichinga, whose village is close to Kuda village, confirmed the incident and revealed that the insurgents came through Malakwaya, a section of the Sambisa forest. 
 
 
The village head said that he had yet to learn the exact casualty figure. 
 
“But I know that one old woman was burnt to ashes because she couldn’t flee her home when the insurgents set her house ablaze,” he said. 
 
Kanuri said that scared people in the affected communities had fled to Gulak town and other places to seek refuge. 
 
According to him, the security situation in the area has worsened because the insurgents adopted different styles. 
 
“Today, they will invade our villages as rustlers, another day they stormed our villages in convoy of vehicles and some time they will use cattle to deceive us that they are normal herdsmen only to start killing people. 
 
“We need help in our area. Many are beginning to return but with current security situation, they may not return to these areas.” 
 
“These crazy boys are still hiding in caves inside Sambisa forest,” he added. 
 
 
One of the villagers, who gave his name as Usman, said that he was trying to recover from the terrorists’ attack unleashed on them last year, when he lost his property again to inferno that happened on Monday. He stressed that it was time to hunt for the insurgents but not to wait for another attack. 
 
“The best thing is to follow them to their hidings than allow them to continue to kill innocent Nigerians,” he added. 
 
Meanwhile, the Nigerian army has intensified its efforts in the war against the deadly Boko Haram sect. 
 
Colonel Sani Usman, the military spokesman, said that one of the patrol teams of 254 Task Force Battalion carried out clearance operation at Kubwa village in Borno state in which they arrested 2 suspected terrorists hiding among the community.

The source learned that the boy raised an alarm when he started experiencing pains in his erect penis. The receptionist reportedly met the boy looking very weak. He was then rushed to a nearby hospital. 
 
 
A source was informed that the said woman normally comes to the hotel with the boy after dropping off her children in school. 
 
A source Reported: “She will be in the hotel from 8a.m. till about 2p.m., when she will go and pick the children from school. She spends all the time with the boy in the hotel room.” 
It was further gathered that the woman was always buying milk and sex enhancement drugs for the boy. However, on this said day, she was alleged to have given the boy an overdose, leading to the boy’s permanent state of erection. 
 
The boy is said to receiving treatment under the watch of some military personnel, who came to his rescue. 
 
It was learned that police have also been informed, but that they intend to allow the boy regain his strength before going after the married woman, who is said to be a mother of three and married to a wealthy man.

The Federal Capital Territory Police Command has justified the disruption of a gay wedding last Saturday at a hotel in Jiwa Community of Abuja, King’s Land Hotel. 
 
The FCT Police Command spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police Anjuguri Manzah, said the command received an intelligence report and swiftly moved to the venue of the event to stop the marriage from holding. 
 
He said, “We acted based on the provisions of the Same-Sex Prohibition Act signed into law in 2013. 
 
“We received an intelligence report and acted fast by moving to the venue of the event to stop it.” 
 
 
 
Manzah, who gave the names of the couple as Ibrahim Lawal (husband) and Umar Tahir (wife), added that the men were both from Kaduna State. 
 
He said the police were investigating the case and would charge the couple and other persons involved in the ceremony to court. 
 
Apart from the couple, Manzah said the police also arrested some other persons connected to the ceremony. 
 
He said, “We also arrested the sponsors of the wedding and the owner of the hotel where the event was billed to hold.” 
 
In 2013, ex-President Goodluck Jonathan signed into law the Same-Sex Prohibition Act. 
 
Parts of the Act read, “A marriage contract or civil union entered into between persons of same sex: (a) is prohibited in Nigeria; and (b) shall not be recognised as entitled to the benefits of a valid marriage. 
 
“A person who enters into a same sex marriage contract or civil union commits an offence and is liable on conviction to a term of 14 years imprisonment.” 
 
Nigeria is among 38 African countries which outlaw same-sex marriage.</div>

Operatives of the Rapid Response Squad, RRS, of Lagos State Police Command have arrested a suspected madman with 22 Automatic Teller Machine, ATM, cards, two mobile phones and power bank in Victoria Island. 
 
 
The man, who identified himself as Lanrewaju Jaiyeola, 39, was intercepted by the police after the suspicious manner he carried a backpack along Ozumba Mbadiwe Road. 
 
A reliable police source said 22 assorted credit cards, one Nokia phone, a blackberry, a power bank, several bank tellers of recent bank transactions and lots of invoices, amidst numerous pieces of papers, were found on him. 
 
He added that they discovered that eight of the credit cards were still valid. Out of these, three would expire in 2018, another three would expire in 2017, while two would expire in 2016. All the credit cards bore different names and of various banks. 
 
Confirming the arrest, RRS Commander, ACP Olatunji Disu, added that upon arrival at the RRS Headquarters in Alausa, the suspect made “statements suggestive of somebody disguising as a mad man to perpetrate crime around that axis.” 
 
He said: “Initially, we noticed that he was mentally balanced because he was answering the questions posted to him ade-quately. But all of a sudden, he started sounding incoherent and illogical. 
 
“He threatened the investigative Police officer, saying ‘I will make life unbearable for you if you don’t let me go’.</div>

He said the complainant, Ekpe Ifeoma, reported at the Ojota Police Station that the accused had snatched her handbag containing her blackberry phone valued at N25, 000. 
 
He said the police called the complainants’ phone and tracked down the accused with the phone at Mile 12. 
 
 
 
The offence contravened Section 285 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2011.</div>
