The 17-year-old told newsmen in Maiduguri that she was abducted five years ago, alongside her parents, in Madagali in Adamawa, after a terror attack on the village. 
 
“I was abducted alongside my parents in Madagali in Adamawa after the terrorists attacked our village. We were taken to a camp in the bush where we were forcefully indoctrinated by the group,” she said. 
 
The suspected suicide bomber alleged that her parents were killed after they had refused to be indoctrinated. 
 
“My parents were executed because they did not join the group. 
 
“I was married off to a Boko Haram militant with whom I lived in the camp,” she said. 
 
“One day I was asked to wear the bombs. I was brought to Maiduguri with an instruction that I detonate the bomb where there is a large crowd of people,” the teenager added. 
 
She said that she declined to detonate the explosive because she did not want to die. 
 
“They said I should press the button but I refused and allowed security men to capture me alive. 
“My four siblings are still with the terrorists in the camp,” Yusuf said. 
 
Maj.- Gen. Lucky Irabor the Theatre Commander of Operation Lafiya Dole had presented her along with two unindentified girls to newsmen during a weekly briefing in Maiduguri.</div>

The Army said “quite a number of them are escaping the theatre of operation in the North East to various parts of the country and elsewhere. 
 
 
 
A statement by Brigadier General Sani Usman, Acting Director, Public Relations said, “Therefore, members of the public especially residents of Adamawa, Borno and Yobe States, are hereby requested to be extra vigilant, security conscious of strange movements or persons in the society. 
 
“The public are also please requested to report any suspicious person or group of persons to the security agencies for prompt action. 
 
“We wish to reiterate our commitment of clearing the remnants of the Boko Haram terrorists in all their suspected hideouts by the end of this year. We therefore solicit for more public support and cooperation to achieve that.</div>

The girls were among the over 200 female students kidnapped from their government owned school in Chibok, Borno State, in April 2014. Scores of the remaining g girls are still with the insurgents. 
 
The federal government had in October denied swapping Boko Haram members in detention for the freed girls, saying the release was “the product of painstaking negotiations and trust on both sides.” 
 
On Saturday, the military spokesperson, Rabe Abubakar, said reports of payment of ransom were not true.

“The attention of Defence Headquarters (DHQ), has been drawn to a news story by the Punch newspapers alleging that ransom was paid by the government in exchange for the recently released of 21 of the abducted Chibok girls. This unsubstantiated story, to say the least, is quite unfortunate. It is important to recall here that several statements have been issued by the military high command to clarify the issue surrounding the release of the girls, which the whole world applauded. It is therefore worrisome that some sections of the media continue to undermine this modest effort of the government, security agencies and other stakeholders. It is imperative to state categorically that the sponsors of this media campaign have a hidden agenda which is best known to them. 
 
“The military and other security agencies will not be distracted and would remain focussed in achieving its objectives in the North East. The important thing is that the release have been made and circumstances surrounding this effort should not be a matter of controversy so as not to overheat the polity and jeopardising the ongoing efforts to secure the release of the remaining girls and other innocent citizens still in captivity of the terrorists. 
 
“The insinuations that ransom was paid to the terrorists which the terrorists used to escalate the recent attacks in the North East is completely false and imagination of the author. The general public should therefore discountenance it in its entirety. 
 
“The DHQ wishes to once more remind the media to be cautious of such reports which has serious implication on national and to further add that, as partners in progress, the media also has a stake in the ongoing efforts to restore lasting peace in the North East and the country in general.”</div>

Ali led one of the army’s fiercest-ever battles with Boko Haram, in February 2015, culminating in the recapture of Baga town in Borno state. 
 
Sani Usman, army spokeman, said he was killed in an encounter with the insurgents on Friday. 
 
The deceased was was granted accelerated promotion from rank of major to lieutenant-colonel in September 2015, for his courageous performance in a series of the army’s engagements with Boko Haram. 
 
Usman added that four soldiers were killed, but that troops killed 14 of the insurgents who attacked a location of the army in Borno state. 
 
“Yesterday at about 10.00pm suspected Boko Haram terrorists attacked a 119 Battalion Nigerian army location at Mallam Fatori, northern Borno state. The troops fought gallantly and repelled the attack, killing 14 Boko Haram terrorists,” he said. 
 
“Unfortunately, we lost an officer and four soldiers, while four other soldiers sustained various degrees of injuries during the encounter. One of those killed in action, was Lieutenant Colonel Muhammad Abu Ali, the Commanding Officer of 272 Task Force Tank Battalion.” 
 
During TheCable’s investigative trip to the theatre of war, soldiers, majority of whom have built an unwanted reputation for always criticising the army hierarchy, spoke highly of Ali’s professionalism. 
 
One of the soldiers, who partook in the Baga operation, narrated his experience to TheCable . 
 
“In the case Baga, when it was recaptured from Boko Haram, Abu Ali, who led that operation, told the soldiers that they should not worry, that they should only do five percent of the job, that he was going to do 95% of the job with the tanks,” he had said. 
 
“And that was exactly what happened. He did most of the work with the tanks. He was a major at that time and his promotion after the operation was automatic because he performed very well. One smallish guy like that o.”</div>

 While the UK pledged additional 80 million pounds, the U.S pledged 41 million dollars, NAN reported. 
 The pledge was made at the high level side event on humanitarian crisis in the Lake Chad Basin, at the 71st UN General Assembly in New York. 
 According to Nigeria’s foreign affairs ministry on Saturday in Abuja, Tobias ELLwood, UK Minister for Africa, says “this is in addition to the 90 million pounds of humanitarian assistance we have already delivered in the region.’’ 
 “50 million pounds will go toward meeting the needs of work in the affected communities in Nigeria, including food assistance and access to essential household items and services. 
 “And 30 million pounds to support those affected by the spread of Boko Haram into Cameroun, Chad and Niger.’’ 
 He said the UK was proud of its humanitarian contributions, but call on international partners to do the same. 
 “It is imperative that the international community and governments in the affected region redouble the efforts,’’ ELLwood said.

 In a statement issued by Col. Sani Usman, acting Director Army Public Relations in Abuja, the army, however said it lost two soldiers during the fight. 
 Usman said the terrorists launched attacked on troops of Operation Lafiya Dole and Multinational Task Force at about 6:30 a.m. on Thursday, which lasted for two hours. 
 He said while many of the insurgents escaped with gunshot wound, four soldiers also sustained injuries. 
 “The bodies of our late colleagues and the wounded have since been evacuated. 
 “The troops have continued mop up and clearance operations of the remnants of the terrorists. 
 “They have also intensified vigilance and high level of alertness,” he said. 
 Usman said items recovered from the terrorists include a gun truck, one 60mm Mortar tube, seven 60mm mortar bomb, a General Purpose Machine (GPMG), three damaged AK 47 Rifle and four bandoliers of anti-aircraft rounds of ammunition.

He spoke while reacting to a statement credited to the Senate Leader Mohammed Ndume, who also hails from Gwoza, calling on IDPs to return without waiting for government directive. 
 
The Emir insisted that the so-called liberation of Gwoza communities hitherto under Boko Haram control by troops was only visible on the pages of newspapers. 
 
He noted that those who took courage and returned to resettle in Gwoza town could not move out of the community, as they were likely to fall into the hands of insurgents that still surrounded the town without confrontation. 
 
The Royal Father spoke to Vanguard yesterday at one of the resettlement camps in Maiduguri, few days after visiting Gwoza town. 
Muhammadu succeeded his Late father, Idrissa Timta who was assassinated by Boko Haram in May, 2014 on his way to attend funeral ceremony of the late emir of Gombe State. 
 
He lamented that no traditional ruler would like to stay away for a long time from his domain together with his over 300,000 subjects displaced, but as Allah (God) had destined it, he had no excuse. 
 
According to him, those agitating for return of IDPs to their communities, especially those from Gwoza were only doing so to expose the already traumatized people to further attacks. 
 
The Traditional ruler revealed that last week, before proceeding to Gwoza with the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Usman Durkwa, he was among those who on that same day accompanied the two emirs of Askira and Uba who recently relocated back to their domain after spending two years in Maiduguri. Regretting that the level of destruction of lives and properties in Gwoza alone, was far more than what obtainable in neighbouring Askira and Uba, now free from Boko Haram occupation.

The Appeal Court, in a judgment delivered by Justice Y. B. Nimpar, rejected the appeal filed by the convicts and upheld the judgment of the federal court. 
 
Justice Ibrahim Buba of the Federal High Court in Lagos had, on September 30, 2014, handed down the verdict after the Lagos State Government, through the Ministry of Justice, successfully prosecuted the terrorists before the court. 
 
The state government had filed charges against four accused persons for conspiracy to commit a felony to wit: acts of terrorism, concealing information about acts of terrorism and being in possession of prohibited firearms and ammunition contrary to various sections of the Terrorism Prevention (Amendment) Act, 2013 and the Firearms Act, Cap F.28 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004. 
 
Out of the four persons charged, three were sentenced to 25 years imprisonment each, while the fourth accused was discharged and acquitted. 
 
Those convicted and sentenced were Ali Mohammed Modu, Adamu Ali Karumi and Ibrahim Usman Ali. 
 
Dissatisfied with the verdict, the convicts through their lawyer had approached the Appeal Court in Lagos asking that the verdict be upturned on the grounds that they were charged under inapplicable laws, and that the 25-year-jail term was excessive. 
 
One of the convicts, Ibrahim Usman Ali, had specifically argued that he was inadvertently convicted and sentenced for a count with which he was not charged.

One of the 64 hostages released from Boko Haram hideouts in Sambisa forest repeatedly cried last week to return to her ‘hubby’ in the Boko Haram enclave during handing over of the hostages by the military to the state governor. 
 
The governor described the development as sad. 
 
“Imagine a small girl who is just nine years old crying to return to her Boko Haram husband in the bush to continue with the life of terrorists. This clearly shows the insurgents have been indoctrinating their captives and hostages,” the governor said weekend at Dikwa during a visit to officers and soldiers of the 22 Brigade of the Nigerian Army. 
 
He said Boko Haram have abducted many people especially boys and girls and indoctrinate them in ways that they become unwilling even in accepting freedom. He urged troops not to relent, adding that the government and people of the state appreciated the sacrifices being made by the military troops, not only in securing communities previously held by Boko Haram but trailing the insurgents to their hideouts. 
 
“We will be eternally grateful to you, officers and men of the Nigerian military for the huge sacrifices you’re making,” he said, promising to rebuild the operational base of the newly established brigade destroyed by the insurgents. He also announced the donation of two 4-wheel drive vehicles to the brigade for its operations.</div>

The nomads, who spoke to SUNDAY PUNCH under the auspices of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, dismissed the ultimatums given by different groups for the herdsmen to vacate the southern part of the country. 
This is despite the fact that groups, including foremost Yoruba farmers’ pressure group and ethnic militia, Agbekoya Farmers Association of Nigeria in the South-West; the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (South-East); the Independent Peoples of Biafra (South-East); and some ex-Niger Delta militants in the South-South, stated their readiness to defend their territories should herdsmen attack their communities again. 
 
Suspected Fulani herdsmen, who grazed their cattle from the northern part of the country to the southern part, had been accused of killing, raping and robbing members of their host communities. 
 
The Enugu incident, where several lives were lost, was the most recent. 
 
But the herdsmen, in separate interviews with our correspondents on Saturday, noted that it was wrong for people to restrict their movement as the constitution guaranteed their movement into any part of the country. 
 
The Chairman, Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association, Plateau State, Mr. Nuru Abdullahi, said nobody could deprive Fulani herdsmen of their constitutional right of free movement.

Abdullahi said, “Why would they ask them not to go to the southern part of the country? It is their constitutional right to move freely as guaranteed by the laws of the land. What the various governments and security agencies should do is to prevent attacks and counter-attacks and such things that breed violence like cattle rustling and trespassing into farmlands. 
 
“The Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria guarantees freedom of movement for every citizen of the country; this includes the right to live, work and carry out any legitimate activity in any part of the country. If and when you breach this freedom, then, the law should deal with you. So, asking anybody not to go to any part of the country is unconstitutional.” 
 
Also, the Chairman, MCBAN, North-West Zone, Mr. Ardo Ahmadu Suleiman, warned against criminalising all Fulani herdsmen over the attacks. 
 
He said, “We are law abiding citizens of Nigeria. The constitution forbids anybody or group from banning anybody’s movement from one part of the country to another. We have been staying peacefully with tribes across the country for ages. Therefore, for anyone to say he wants to ban Fulani from entering their land is uncalled for.” 
 
However, several socio-cultural and militia groups in the southern part of the country on Saturday stated their readiness to reject the invasion of their communities by Fulani herdsmen. 
 
Agbekoya gave the Federal Government a 14-day ultimatum to stop the incessant attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen on farmers in Yorubaland even as it vowed to retaliate any attack on its members. 
 
The position of the group was made known by its National Publicity Secretary, Mr. Olatunji Bandele, in a telephone interview with one of our correspondents on Saturday. 
 
According to Bandele, if the Federal Government fails to act decisively within the stipulated time, the Agbekoya will have to defend its people with whatever means at its disposal. 
 
Bandele said the association held an emergency meeting last Thursday where it discussed the incessant onslaught by Fulani herdsmen against Yoruba farmers, especially in the Oke Ogun area of Oyo State. 
 
He stated that if the situation was not brought under control, the group would “close down all markets in the South West; make sure that Fulani herdsmen do not enter any village in Yoruba land with their cows. And if they dare enter, they are doing it at their own risk. 
 
“We have alerted Agbekoya South West warriors across Yorubaland to be battle ready in case the Fulani herdsmen do not heed our warning because this thing has continued for the past four to five years now.” 
 
Bandele added, “We have other security measures that we are taking but keeping to ourselves. If the Fulani herdsmen failed to heed our warning and they dare enter Yorubaland, they will be doing so at their own risk. We are waiting for the Federal Government to take decisive action.” 
 
The deadline, he added, started to read from last Thursday. 
 
Asked if the group was now arming its members against the reported sophisticated fire arms of the suspected herdsmen, Bandele said, “We are not bothered with whether they carry arms or not, we will deal with the Fulani herdsmen hands down. Asked what the association would do per chance any part of Yoruba land was attacked, he said, “We will retaliate.” 
 
The leader of MASSOB, Mr. Uchenna Madu, lamented that Igbo people had been “talking and talking” while they watched their people being killed. He stated that it was time for “action” to end killings by herdsmen. 
 
Madu said, “The Fulani herdsmen are cowards. After the recent attacks, they ran away. If they mean business, let them wait for Ndi’gbo and we will engage them man-to-man. 
 
“It will be demeaning to ask us if we have the capability to confront them.” 
 
IPOB, another Igbo secessionist group which dismissed security agencies as failing to secure the people, alleged that Boko Haram had been disguising as herdsmen to attack parts of the country. 
 
The Publicity Secretary of IPOB, Mr. Emma Powerful, stated that the group would not be at the forefront of reprisals against criminal herdsmen in the region but would encourage those under attack to defend and retaliate in self defence. 
 
He said, “The world is watching IPOB; the plan was for us to retaliate the attacks by Fulani herdsmen but we will not do so. Rather, we will ask those who are under attack to defend themselves or get killed. 
 
“The international rule is that you have the right to self defence if your life is under threat; security agencies know that. Face whatever or whoever is going to kill you or you die.” 
 
Another Yoruba group, Oodua Peoples Congress, said although the Yoruba were perceived as accommodating, the group would not sit by and pretend as if all was well. 
 
The National Coordinator of the OPC, Mr. Gani Adams, told one of our correspondents in a telephone interview that the attacks by Fulani herdsmen in the region had gone out of hand. 
 
Adams said, “Nowadays, it is becoming too rampant in the South-West. Now, nobody is provoking the Fulani herdsmen; they are the ones taking laws into their hands, killing and maiming innocent people in their (victims’) communities. 
 
“These Fulani herdsmen may even be Boko Haram in disguise. If government is looking at this as if they are an influential tribe or race in Nigeria and that they can’t tackle it, it may become a very serious security treat. 
 
“We the Yoruba think that we are highly accommodating and that if a stranger who is living in our community has committed an offence, the law should take its own course. But I know for sure that the South-East will not allow their people to be maimed.” 
 
The Chairman of MCBAN in Bauchi State, Abdullahi Abubakar, told SUNDAY PUNCH that the association was planning to hold an emergency executive meeting on Monday or Tuesday to discuss the issues affecting herdsmen. 
 
Meanwhile, the Christian Association of Nigeria and the National Association of Nigerian Students have called on President Muhammadu Buhari to come out boldly and tackle the problem. 
 
The Chairman of CAN in the 19 Northern States, Rev. Yakubu Pam, said the President needed to be courageous in tackling his own people and condemning their terrible activities.

The bishops who spoke against the backdrop of last Friday’s attempt on the life of John Cardinal Onaiyekan, Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, said the appeal became urgent following the brazenness with which the herdsmen commit atrocities in the state without adequate security checks. 
 
Cardinal Onaiyekan was attacked by suspected herdsmen as he was returning from the 10th anniversary of the enthronement of Akubueze as a bishop and ceremony marking the creation and 10 years anniversary of the Diocese of Uromi along the Benin-Ekpoma road. 
 
“We thank God that Cardinal Onaiyekan survived the attacks of some criminal elements last week on the Benin- Ekpoma road. If something had happened to him, what would have been the story? We thank God nothing happened and we are using this opportunity to appeal to the President to provide adequate security for the citizens of Edo State,” Akubueze said, in an interview in Benin City. 
 
The Catholic Archbishop stressed that the responsibility of a government is to secure her people stressing that “what we are asking for is not too much for our president. If there is no security of lives and property, no investments or meaningful economic development can take place in the state and the nation at large. We need security and we are demanding that from our government.” 
 
Akubueze noted that the spate of attacks by the so-called herdsmen across the country “is becoming frightening,” adding that there was an urgent need by the state and federal government to deal with the issue of security to protect lives and property of Nigerians with all seriousness. 
 
Recounting the ordeal, the driver to Onaiyekan who simply identified himself as Segun said, the attack happened along the Benin-Ekpoma road close to Ehor about 5.00pm last Friday. 
 
His words: “We left Benin for Uromi, and about 5.00pm on the fateful day, I think very close to Ehor, I saw a big pothole and decided to slow down the vehicle. I would have passed the spot with speed but because the cardinal was sleeping, I decided to slow down the vehicle so that he won’t wake up. Suddenly, I saw three men come out of the palm tree plantation by the road side and started shooting at the vehicle. I looked ahead of me, two of them were firing from a distance at the vehicle and I looked behind me another one was firing at the vehicle from behind, so I decided to use reverse gear. 
 
“The other vehicles, who saw me coming with reverse started clearing off the road and when I got to a safe distance, I decided to stop the vehicle and people started running to see what had happened. It was then we realised that the bullets shattered the left passenger window glass and made huge holes on the panel of the door. We just thank God nothing happened to the cardinal or any of us in the vehicle.”</div>
