Brazil was given the honor to host the World Cup, as most of Europe was still in ruins. The home country took the task with a lot of ambition, building the largest soccer venue the world has ever seen – the Maracana stadium.</p><p dir="ltr">While it wasn’t completely finished for the World Cup, it was still mighty impressive and nothing like the world had ever seen before. Brazil was hoping to lift the trophy, and the fact that a bunch of teams refused to travel for the competition for various reasons made the home side an overwhelming favorite.</p><p dir="ltr"><br></p><p dir="ltr">It breezed through the group stages and reached the next phase. For the first and last time in the World Cup’s history, there were no knockouts. The final opponent, Uruguay, barely beat Spain and drew against Sweden. As a result, Brazil needed a draw in the final game against fellow South Americans to win the cup.</p><p dir="ltr"><br></p><p dir="ltr">Considering the performance of both teams so far in the tournament and the home advantage, this seemed inevitable. The final match of the 1950 World Cup was played in front of more than 200,000 Brazilian fans who came to see their country dominate and seal the deal.</p><p dir="ltr"><br></p><p dir="ltr">The press and the whole world expected Brazil to be crowned, and this served as an enormous motivational boost for their opponents. No one believed that Uruguay could upset the odds, which made the players angry and desperate to go out there and win.</p><p dir="ltr"><br></p><p dir="ltr">The start was great for Brazil, as the hosts went ahead, which pleased the crowd. However, Uruguay got back in the game in the 66th minute when Alcides Ghiggia crossed from the flank and Juan Alberto Schiaffino equalized.</p><p dir="ltr"><br></p><p dir="ltr">The pressure started building, and the unthinkable happened about 15 minutes later. Ghiggia was pushing from a similar position, and the Brazilian goalkeeper Barbosa, who was voted the best player in this position, decided that the Uruguayan winger would once again cross, and Barbosa made a positional mistake.</p><p dir="ltr"><br></p><p dir="ltr">Ghiggia took full advantage and scored the winning goal for the visitors. Uruguay won 2-1, and this was probably the biggest heartbreak in soccer history. Brazil couldn’t believe it, and goalkeeper Barbosa would spend the rest of his days as one of the biggest villains in the country.</p></div>

President of the Nigeria Football Federation Amaju Pinnick has declared that Sunday Oliseh will be the last Nigerian coach for the Super Eagles under the current board. Pinnick made the position of the federation known while speaking at the 18th Annual Africa Business Conference of the Harvard Business School, Boston, Massachusetts, United States according to hotsports.tv.<br/>

The FA boss told the gathering that the federation had reached the end of the road in keeping faith with Nigerians as head of the Eagles coaching staff.<br/>

He said, “After this Sunday Oliseh debacle, we have definitely turned the corner. We are now going to start shopping for a well-grounded and qualified foreign coach to tinker the team. Enough is enough. “What we have learnt is that there is a world of difference between being a good coach and being a good manager.”<br/>

The Olympic Eagles coach Samson Siasia was announced as a quick replacement for Oliseh last Friday in what is seen as a temporary measure. And with Pinnick’s statement any thought of keeping Siasia for a long period as the Eagles coach may have been laid to rest.<br/>

Oliseh and the NFF parted ways last week after just eight months on the job. The former Eagles captain made public his resignation in the early hours of Friday via Twitter.<br/>
<br/>
In his Twitter message Oliseh said he was quitting, “Due to contract violations, lack of support, unpaid wages, benefits to my players, assistant coaches and myself, I resign as Super Eagles chief coach. I feel fortunate, blessed and eternally grateful for having had the honour to play, captain and coach this great nation of ours, Nigeria.”<br/>
<br/>
The NFF members had first talked about getting a foreigner as the Eagles coach soon after asking the former Eagles coach Stephen Keshi to go last year. Oliseh’s appearance on the scene ended the talks about getting somebody from Europe.<br/>
<br/>
No name has been mentioned but if the NFF go all the way, it may mean having foreigners in the two senior national teams as the FA had announced in February that they are in search of a foreigner for the Super Falcons too.</div>

Manny Pacquiao has already  lost the backing of Nike  in the furor  over his controversial LGBT comments. Now he has also lost the approval of Magic Johnson.<br/>

The basketball Hall of Famer and part-owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers took to Twitter and applauded the shoe/apparel company for cutting ties with the famous boxer — in the wake of Pacquiao saying  gay people are “worse than animals.”<br/>

Johnson took it one step further, tweeting that he is boycotting any further Pacquiao fights.<br/>

Predictably, Johnson, whose son is gay, has received his own strong responses against his position on Twitter, with many calling out the Lakers icon for supposed hypocrisy.<br/>

Johnson tweeted: “I applaud Nike for terminating Manny Pacquiao’s contract after his derogatory statements that gay people are worse than animals. Fans of all walks of life including gay fans supported May/Pac fight putting $100M in his pocket. I guess to him their money is still green. I won’t be watching another one of Manny Pacquiao’s fights.”</div>
